Andreas Weimann's superb form suggests Derby County may regret selling him to Bristol City

Andreas Weimann has been excellent for Bristol City since his transfer from Derby County.

Andreas Weimann’s early season form for Bristol City suggests Derby County may made a blunder by selling him to their Championship rivals this summer without giving him the opportunity to work with new manager Frank Lampard.

The former Aston Villa man has been a real hit for the Robins since his reported £2 million move (Daily Star) from Derby County this summer, scoring an impressive five goals in his opening five Championship matches.

Ironically, Weimann has already scored the same amount of goals for Bristol City this term as he managed for Derby in 40 league games last season - but the biggest difference is where he is now being played.

Weimann has on several occasions claimed his best position is at centre-forward, yet Derby persistently played him in a wide role, while Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has played him down the middle.

Derby County splashed out around £8 million bringing strikers Martyn Waghorn (Daily Mail) and Jack Marriott (Sky sports) to Pride Park, yet both have yet to make an impression - as David Nugent has so far gotten the nod upfront.

With Weimann is such impressive form - not only scoring goals but also topping the Championship charts in terms of shots per game - it begs the question why Derby failed to spot the player’s talent as a number 9.

I love this comment and it proves it's better to be prudent.

Massive credit to MA & LJ for bringing AW to the club, at the moment do we miss B Reid, don't think so, and a lovely profit from the sale and purchase.

Early doors, but looking excellent business. I never had doubts about his work rate suitably replacing that of Reid's, but I did worry that he might not be as prolific a finisher.

It does go to show that football isn't always as simple as player A being better than player B, it's about how they contribute to and what they can make out of the system the team plays.

It sounds somewhat strange to see a comment about Lee playing Weimann in the correct position when it was one of the biggest negatives against him about not knowing where people should play. Perhaps LJ is learning more than I thought possible and let the positives continue all you want but the next acid test he has to pass for me is our home form which for years has been mediocre at best. All in all a satisfactory start to the season which almost looked improbable 3 matches ago heading for 2 difficult games on the road and we came up with the goods.

The signing of Weimann , the loan of Kalas and persuading Marlon to sign for another 3 years , will prove pivotal to our success this year.

Posted on the Derby JA606 board and although there were a couple of sensible replies, a few over there seem to be up their own @rses with statements like:
    - he wasn’t good enough for us
    - he was a small fish in a big sea
    Etc
    https://www.ja606.co.uk/articles/viewArticle/395437

Hope we smash them and Yman gets a hat-trick.

Not good enough because they didn't play him in his preferred position.......having said that, I do believe that players should be more versatile..

Whilst few would argue that Derby are a bigger club than City, it's hardly like there's a massive gulf between the two nowadays, so the attitude of 'he wasn't good enough for us, but he is for you' is a little bit arrogant on their part. You can certainly understand why they opted to play Vydra in the centre ahead of him, but acknowledging that his being played out of position contributed to him not making as good a contribution, rather than 'not being good enough' is probably more accurate.

It really was one of those cases where the transfer was best for all parties, though particularly for us and Weimann himself given the comparatively low transfer fee. I do sense that Derby are a club that have, and to a degree still are, gambling on promotion sorting out their finances, so if they don't achieve it in the next couple of seasons, without some outside investment it could become more and more difficult for them to do so...

It poses a conundrum this w/e for LJ with Fammy now available.
Think I'd keep the same side and Fammy on the bench to start.
However, I've faith that LJ will get it right.

Without wishing to sound disrespectful towards Blackburn I think either Fanmy or Weiman would be an ok option in this game.
