Agree. Go as big as you can on 1 or 2 quality players then try and fill out the squad with youngsters or maybe a loan if seems worthwhile. It's rare that a cheap purchase gives you much over just trusting a young player from the academy.

Its true. There are a couple fo key things to have in place to assist this (which we don't). A very strong academy which is producing enough players of a certain quality to:

    1. Fill out the squad
    2. When you do have to sell a crown jewel, then if say it has to be done in a January, you have players to come in and do a job

We should aim to have a strong one anyway, but refuse to invest.

The other thing you must have is an active and large scouting network. You need to replace those which go because they have to (silly money or bigger club). Essentially Newcastle should be building towards a Spurs type set up. Quite remarkable now how they have got their net spend where they have. The sale of Bale was fortunate and allowed them to invest heavily. I'm sure when they bought Bale they knew his value would increase but nobody could foresee a 90m player going to Real Madrid. They'd have chopped your bollocks off if you'd said that just to avoid the madness spreading. Liverpool had similar in some ways up until Klopp arrived. They now seem in a position to invest and compete with Man C almost. Again though look at how they re-invest. Big sales of the likes of Coutinho, Suarez see bulk strengthening then you can fine tune.
