Newcastle have joined Sunderland and Everton in the race for Juventus striker Alessandro Matri.

Magpies manager Alan Pardew has made no secret of his desire to add to his strike force this summer, and despite signing Loic Remy on loan from QPR it seems they are not finished yet.

Italian hitman Matri has been made available for transfer by Juventus, and Newcastle have sounded out the player’s agent to discuss a switch.

Everton and Sunderland are also keen on the 29-year-old, who scored ten goals 35 matches last season, but have been unable to raise funds to meet his £6million price tag.

Newcastle are in a position to pay that, and after seeing moves for Darren Bent and Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis stall in recent weeks, they are keen for a quick deal.

It’s thought that the striker would be offered a three-year deal at St James’ Park, and with his ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play he would offer a different option to Remy and Papiss Cisse.

Matri was close to joining Napoli last month before the switch collapsed at the last minute.

That would be a great signing. Good in the air and on the ground. Clinical finisher and scorer of power headers. Not the quickest, but whatever. I see him and Remy making a decent partnership.

If this can happen for 7 million euros I think we got a potential hero on our hands... far superior footballer to Darren Bent and Gomis.

I read we enquired about him and Quagallerria. Matri for whatever reason was a no-go. Not sure if it was us, him or them

It's getting really boring now! Is there any players we haven't been linked with? Why don't they just come out and say - "We are not in the market to buy anyone" instead of all of this lying bull ****?
