With us being in the Premier League, and Alan Tate struggling in the Championship, do you think he will spend most of the season on the bench.

The thing with Tate is that he shows moments of magic, like attacking against Reading he played through Dyer and Borini for the penaltys, but then he makes stupid errors and defends badly at times.

I think if Tate did alot of training over the summer, he could be a decent Premiership player, but in my opinion as it stand he isn't good enough and is easily replaceable.

Thing is you could say the same with Monk as well, honestly I don't think either will be first team regulars

Thats what I said to a few mates, but it seemed that people thought he would still be in the team just because he's captain

Think its time for a new captain to be honest, I love monk he has been a faithful servant to the club, we need a captain who plays regular first team football, Williams is the one for me!

Yeah I have to agree with that, Williams is a quality player and is dedicated to the Swans just like Monk

Give me 3 million & I'll talk Liverpool into Tate' s replacement , Daniel Agger . Sneaky , like Tate , coming up field always selling passes & gaining ground , very quick & a canon for a shot .

I found it a bit strange the comment made by Gary Monk just after the play off final, when the interviewer had finished talking to him about coming through the leagues with the swans, he was asked if he was looking forward to playing in the premiership next season his reply was " if the club don't sell me in the meantime", it appeared tongue in cheek at the time, but i wonder if he is having doubts that he will be here next season, the feedback from buck seems to say he will have his chance,

Think he's beyond us, agger would probably cost us about the same in wages, and there is no way we would pay that IMO

Agger could have a brilliant season if he could play regular . Rafa payed 5 million for him many moons ago & he's sat most of the time injured or healthy . He could have a great season for somebody & end up paying for himself . Buck will make a few signing in this price range Jager , for sure . Cheers !

Can't see him coming to us , the wage demand is very high and with a signing on fee in the millions it will not be considered seriously, but a loan might ;)

I thought that too Mabon. I think both Monk and Tate will be given the chance, and as I said somewhere else if you can step up from League Two to Championship in your team, why not once more? People have been slating Tates ability since we were in L2, personally I think a little improvement on his selection of options and positioning and he´d be a tidy backup player for us next season at worst.

I agree Scott, I think Tate has been good this season and I don't really understand why he get's so much stick. He's been a great player for us all these years and I think he deserves a bit of Love from us. We all Dream of a Team of Alan Tates, a team of Alan Tates....

As Brendan has said, he has learnt that is a mistake to make decisions based upon sentiment, as he learned this lesson the hard way at reading. That being said there is no reason performance wise not to have monk and Tate in the main squad, with one of the two even being a starting option. As long as we have options or after strengthening the squad, then if it is obvious they cannot step up to cope with the premiership standard Brendan can then reconsider.

No Jamie thats not what we said. He will be in the team because he's quality. Hardly ever makes a mistake and is easily premiership quality

Also i agree with the comment people have been slating tate since we were in league 2.
He's not good enough for league 1
He's not good enough for championship - it's too fast for him

and now he's not good enough for Prem

Give him his chance, he will prove you wrong again.
Maybe at Centre Back though, when Monk is injured

    Rhys,

Honestly not slating any of them, just stating reality here, can see Monk's off the cuff remark being in fact reality, think he could be shipped out, tate is a good squad player and he has exceeded expectation , but I feel whilst he'll be here it won't be as a starting 11 and will come off the bench.

Williams the new captain for me

I don't think Tate should be a first teamer that's for sure. We need to strengthen our defence - I am pretty sure that many people watching the game and seeing that we conceded from 2 successive corners would probably believe we will be very weak from set piece moves.

I think we need to get rid of some of the players who were consistently on the bench during the last campaign - players like Serran and Pintado come to mind.

I was one who thought Tate was not going to be good enough to make the step up to the Championship when we got promoted from League 1. But, he proved me wrong and made a massive improvement over the summer. This time I again think he'll struggle to make the step up, so he'll probably prove me wrong again :D

As for Monk, he's a better defender than Tate imo, having said that I do think Brendan will bring another centre-back in and drop Monk to the bench.
Williams for the captaincy if Monk isn't a regular.

I don´t see anything wrong in keeping the captaincy as it is. You don´t need to be on the field to be a good club captain, and you can´t ask for a better role model than Garry Monk for that job. If he´s not in the team, Tate is vice captain and gets the nod, and if he´s not playing, Ash maybe? Dorus?

Tate's strength, and perhaps his saving grace, is his versatility to cover all the back positions. The way he backed off Kebe at Wembley was scary at times, and a better winger would have torn him to shreds. We are facing better wingers and strikers now, he is not a starting option. Hats off to him for the way he applied himself in the Championship, a league I thought was far above him. His love for the club is unquestionable, but his days of regular first team football for us are surely over.

We needed a new CB this season really, so surely that is a priority for next year. Monk is adequate experienced back up, something we lack, and will have value through the season. Unless we get another versatile defender of a better quality, Tate as it pains me to say it, still has some value.
