True. I was surprised to read how many clubs in mid-table or even below us (Wolves; Birmingham; Blackburn) were talking at the weekend about hoping to get in the play-offs. Well good luck to them, but the thought scares me. This season can be spent consolidating our Championship status, and, as suggested on another thread, trying out our under-21 stars. I'd especially like to see Evina and Wiggins on the left. Could be a dream team, just like Solly and Wilson; both hard workers who can attack and defend.
We shouldn´t be under the illusion that "frees" necessarily cost less than other transfers. If a player is worth (say) quarter million, the club will end up paying that amount one way or the other, whether in transfer fees, agent´s fees, enhanced salary or other inducements to sign. Prices are largely determined by supply and demand, more than the status of the player´s contract. You might save a bit by waiting to sign someone on a free but then you might miss a player you really wanted. Plus signing now gives them half a season to become part of the team instead of the relatively short period pre·season. The downside of course is you have to start paying their wages sooner. I agree about the loans now we look safe, and with some promising youngsters to try out, too. Only exception would be a loan with a view to a permanent signing. A sort of extended trial which might save us signing a wrong´un.
