    QPR star eyes England recall
By Paul Warburton Jul 16 2012

ANDY Johnson has revealed his number one QPR objective is to score 10 goals – and then catch England coach Roy Hodgson’s eye.

The 31-year-old striker, who earned the last of his eight caps five years ago, also admitted he is reunited with a manager who believes in him – in stark contrast to a torturous last year at Fulham.

Johnson has signed a two-year contract with Rangers on a free in the belief he will be a man reborn under Mark Hughes, even though the Whites ‘tempted him’ to stay.

The striker said: “I had some great managers at Fulham, and Roy and Mark were fantastic.

“But although Martin Jol is a great coach – the truth is we didn’t see eye to eye.

“I had several conversations with him about me playing me out wide – but they went nowhere.

“I can play the role, but it’s not my best position, and there are not many wingers who score a lot of goals from out wide.

“Last year I don’t think I got the amount of games my early season form warranted.”

AJ insists injury problems that included a troublesome knee are a thing of the past and was delighted when Hodgson got the nod for the national team, not least because the new boss knows Johnson inside out.

The player said: “Of course, it’s about taking one step at a time.

“I’ve got to first get into Rangers’ team and hit form. But if I am scoring goals, Roy’s homework on me is already done. He knows he can depend on me.

“I don’t think it would be far fetched for a forward scoring regularly in the Premier League to get included in the international squad – and we’ll have to see.”

The new forward also insists he is a better all-round player than the lightning-fast frontman who was regularly banging in the goals for Crystal Palace and Everton half a decade ago.

“I know the theory is that if I’m in the team, it’s because I will be playing off Bobby (Zamora) at QPR,” he said, “but I don’t agree.

“Sure, I know Bob well from our time together at Fulham. But there are so many combinations Mark Hughes has available to him, and whether I’m leading the line or sitting behind linking up play, I know I can do a good job.

“I’m grateful to Mark for his faith in me. When I was injured at Fulham, he was very careful about bringing me back, and double-checked all the time there were no problems.

“Believe me, there are plenty of managers out there who would throw players back into the fray before they were ready.”

I personally doubt he'll get a start for the Rangers let alone England mate. I like his positivity though. If he does get ten odd goals and plays well then great for the club and all of us. I wish him well as a hoop and hope he enjoys his time as a ranger.
