I was going by the 'nobody would want him as captain'. I'd pick Suarez in a heartbeat, leads by example (most of the time)
Lol; both right, when I said nobody would like to see it I meant more outside the club but he's the only guy showing pride & ferocity at the moment. Performance on par with the passion. He's calmed down to certain extent that he's not quite as self destructive but he's not jaded like some others appear to be. Or maybe they're just plain tired now. It'll not happen me thinks but as it stands I can't look past him.
I agree but all our midfielders are so bloody passive. Lucas back at his best is quite steely but again it's leadership through performance. Just be nice to see someone giving it some if you know what I mean.
I do know what you mean and its something we've not have for at least a decade. Carragher as been great at barking orders but Gerrard is a 'lead by example' captain. Same for others such as Fowler, Redknapp, Hyypia, etc. Not since the days of Wright and Ince have we had a {permenant} vocal leader
I do not personally think the long term solution for club captain is within the club. I think we either need to buy a ready made captain in or a young player who seems like he'll develop into a future leader & captain. I doubt we'll spend £20m on an older person who is captain of their current team so I can see the only solution buying someone in to be a future captain. Someone like McCarthy at Wigan as he seems to be assuming a lot of responsibility there for such a young age, plus he has shown how level headed he is when he rejected Liverpool in favour of Wigan because he felt he had more chance of getting games at Wigan. At the moment we are like the Arsenal of the last 7 years (with less quality, obviously) in that we do play good football and have a lot of talented players but lack the bite and mentality to win our games. Improving our mentality as a club is just as important as improving the actual quality of players here.
This is a reason why I want Suarez as the captain. He has the ability to lead by example (in terms of his performance, not behaviour) and he can inspire, he can get the crowd going. The crowd is very quiet these days and creates tension - Suarez is the player that can lift the entire crowd.
TBH, I don't really believe in this captaincy bollox. At the end of the day, all they do is take part in the opening ceremonies: coin toss, trade of merchandise, shake hands, etc. During in the game it shouldn't just be up to the guy with an armband around his arm, players are responsible and part of a team, they should be looking to gee each other up/show encouragement and lead by example whether they're the captain or not!
I agree but because we have such a young attack, they need a leader. At the moment - they look at Gerrard but does he instill confidence and inspire? I'm not so sure.
Also agree but giving the armband to someone else should not make a difference (unless it means Gerrard isn't playing)
I agree with you - leaders act with and without an armband. But I feel a change could make a difference. There is nothing logical or scientific to prove this but I believe a change is needed.
Players will experience will go a long way. It makes me appreciate Kuyt, Maxi and Bellamy a whole lot more. I remember the game against Chelsea when Bellamy was running onto a ball on the right wing and got in behind the defence, and played a brilliant ball to Maxi who was in the right position at the righ time. The experience, intelligence and technique was so simple but very effective. Can I see Sterling, Shevley and Suarez do this? No I can't. Sterling would run with the ball, hold it up because no one is in the box, then the defenders will have caught up, chance lost.
In addition - we need leadership off the pitch. Paul Tomkins wrote a great article about the lack of experience from top to bottom: FSG are new to football/soccer Ian Ayre is reletively inexperienced as an MD Rodgers only has 1 year in the PL with Swansea Very young squad
