so statistically this is dangerous ground given there are only 3/4 data points.

    But lets look at this

comolli bids for suarez, its rejected, a month of negotiations ensure after which we reportedly pay the asking fee

comolli bids for carroll, its rejected, its deadline day so we meet the asking price. (reportedly)

comolli bids for henderson, its rejected, 2 weeks of negotiations ensure after which we pay the asking price.

Comolli "enquires" about adam, nobody seems to have bidded at this point, but the press make out we are under the fee.

Comolli bids for downing, its rejected.... will negotiations ensue?

Every time our line has been that the fees reported are wildly wrong, for example both suarez and henderson were denied outright by us.

lets leave that aside.... are clubs now simply rejecting anything we bid safe in the knowledge mr comolli will be back in short order increasing the bid?

perhaps its time our club stopped being "right and proper" and admit we approached a few of the mercs oout there and just walked away due to them being greedy?

perhaps its high time to admit hey clichy was on our radar and the fee was not the issue the guy wanted 150k per week and we said get stuffed.... or how about young.... by the way utd are paying him 200k per week to sit o nthe bench so we said get stuffed.

in other words, are we getting walked all over? We walked away from barry, but got done over keane cos it was left so late.... its better not to leave things late.

don't see this as kneejerk reaction... nor pessimism merely a question on whether others see such a pattern emerging.

It's hard to comment on these type of issues as we are only able to speculate. I find it frustrating that we have not signed more players but personally I am just trying to keep the faith and hope it all works out by THE START OF THE SEASON.

luv.... you are right there is too much speculation involved as we don't see the full details and fees are jealously gaurded.... yet the annual reports should show how much spent.....

Where we are right not is needing reinforcements, but yes we must have faith we're working on them ofr the start of the season. The point is though that we do seem to be seeing other clubs making things quite public for their own ends and seem to be safe i nthe knowledge we're not going to walk away... worse safe in the knowledge we'll be back with what they want.

it will be interesting to see what happens with downing now. If we see movement over the next two weeks as things get drawn out and we end up sitting watching SSN saying we paid 20mil while villa say nothing and we deny we paid anything like it, i just think it will be interesting to see as it will show us how comolli does business.

I honestly think that the Adam deal is on its last legs and if things aren't sorted soon then we'll just walk away - This will be the turning point in all negotiations.

I think Liverpool are playing the "Chelsea Game" by throwing in a low bid to get rejected thus upsetting the player then going in with the same bid again or a bit more then getting him.

I don't think this game was played with Henderson as he fits the needed criteria and wouldn't have been upset had he'd have stayed at Sunderland another season

The asking fee for Suarez started out far higher than we paid in the end. So your theory is flawed from the start.

    So how about:

We're asked for £27 million ($43.18 million) for Suarez. Some fans would've paid it but our negotiating team aren't a bunch of weakassed pussies.

Fernando Torres grabs the SSN tickertape by requesting a transfer request.

Torres is knocked off the headlines within a few hours as Liverpool sign Suarez for the fee Damien Comolli had written down in his notebook, which now looks like a bargain.

Fans cry that the club didn't just pay the £27m up front, immediately questioning Comolli's abilities and need to even exist.

Fans erupt in twitdignation when the offer of £40m for Torres with Sturridge or Anelka as makeweights is rejected.

Fans demand answers and an overhaul of transfer negotiation policy when Torres goes for £50m and 70% of the cash is immediately spent on the most promising young striker in the league, thus dashing any hope of another whine about protracted negotiations. Luckily fans could still whine about how high the fee was when we could've bought several foreign players like Babel and Brits like Robbie Keane or Carlton Cole for that kind of money.

I'm not worried in the slightest, even if we don't sign anymore players this summer(i think we will) we are in an infinitely better position than last year, and with the youth teams now starting to bear fruit it might not be "Our year" but the future is definitely bright for LFC.

Are you finding all of this is tiring as i am mate?

5 Minutes of the 'Liverpool Way' and now we should stop doing the 'right thing' and talk about other players

We 'miss out' on Wickham etc and should have bid more, or maybe we shouldn't have bid more but instead publicly declined to, so that clubs think we're less likely to negotiate for a player we want?

I'm confused... what's wrong with our club again?

We should never have gotten rid of H&G. We knew where we were with them - down the lavvy with no money and a manager who spent "over £200m" of that non-money by overpaying players or missing out on players or upsetting Fergie or upsetting Alonso or upsetting the dressing room by upsetting Fergie. Or something.

    General.
    Exactly.
Ajax wanted £30 million for Suarez,Comolli offered £12.5 milllion.
Ajax dropped it down to £25 million..Comolli offered £18 million.
They then agreed a figure that was between the two.Now this is being clever. It does in a way upset the player and back the selling club into a corner. Now Liverpool knew they weren't going to end up in a bidding war as nobody else had put in a firm offer. So they knew they had room to maneovre. And what forced Ajaxs' hand was the fact that Suarez demanded that he be let speak to Liverpool.Ajax knew there was no point keeping an unhappy player,so they agreed to sell.
Regarding Andy Carroll. This was somewhat different. This was the end of the window.Torres upset the apple-cart by leaving it to the last minute to demand a move.Liverpool wanted to cover their backs so they demanded that Chelsea pay what it cost to sign Andy Carroll plus £15 million.Liverpool wouldn't let the deal go through until they signed Andy Carroll, once the deal for Andy Carroll went through Liverpool sanctioned the Torres sale.

suarez is an interesting case no question.... very little info exists.

we seemingly bid ridiculously low and ajax talked to every press hack going about huges dream fees. in this case we creatingly said the fee was less than the reported 21odd million or so.

All i'm saying is there may be a pattern emerging of clubs seeing us as such "weak whatevers" (not going to do there) and making things public, rejecting our bids etc.

You could make the counter case that other clubs are merely telling us players are not for sale or privately rejecting bids.. that would be fair. all I can see is the things i feel are real and i nthe public domina, not the made up stuff.

The torres deal was great, but the fact is the suarez deal didn't happen to quite late after that and this muddied the waters somewhat. to this day other than kenny stating that suarez was happening whether or not torres happened we have no evidence. I'm going with kenny but then he's only got comolli and henry's word for it too.

do you get me? i look for the actual evidence that can be stood over and critically examine it.

for that reason the point by skertls' nips about wickham I can't really comment on... you see either ipswich didn't speak out or we never actually bid for him. I can't tell which. I never said we should have bid more for him simply as I can't say we ever bid for him nor if he was the player to bid for in the first place.

I would say that this liverpool way.. is something kenny alluded to doing business in private and thats fine but when a club and player make it public we should then not be heald to ransom.

for the record, my point was do you see the pattern in either actual signings made under comolli or actions that are confirmed by direct quotes (adam and downing)

There are 5 data points to actually speak to. two deals yet to be done and three we can speak of....

    thats the question.

I agree,-I'm getting a bit tired of it all. We've got dozens of threads all with a slightly different take on the same thing and we're all repeating ourselves all the time and we're all repeating ourselves all the time.
We don't really know what's going on because it's happening behind the scenes and that's how it should be. I'm happy to leave everything to the club because I'm sure they know what they're doing better than we do.
Personally, I don't want to see wholesale replacement of players- I prefer continuity. I don't go with all the 15 players out - 10 in type of posts.

Yeah i'm the same. I'm not going to blindly follow, there are times when you need to question your club. But for me FSG haven't put one foot wrong since they bought us, They've brought in the best manager for the job and ensured he has proved he can still cut it. They brought in a top coach in Steve Clarke, and another one in Kevin Keen. The club structure has been remodeled to include transfer guru and strategist Commoli. We're already expanding revenues. John Henry tries to keep in touch with the fans and listen to them, as well as setting the precedent for the class and dignity with which our club is now conducting itself. We've signed the top class Suarez, smashed £35mil on a potential top class forward in Carroll, and bought Henderson who has great potential. That's the start of a long list, but shows in this instance why for me they've done enough for me to just say get on with it and show me what you can do this summer, and place my trust in them.

Wasn't Robbie Keane's deal brokered by Dick Parry behind Rafa's back?

Parry refused to sanction the deal for Barry, on the ground's it was too much to pay for a player of that age..Then Captain Cock Up, paid that amount for Keane who is the same age as Barry!! Rafa never wanted him, as he would have to change the shape of the team to accommodate him

i'll just jump in on keane.

rafa himself was quoted as saying he wanted keane, he finally admitted that. his excuse was he wanted gareth barry o nthe elft to supply keane and torres up front.

now that was an actual quote.... in other words madness.

I thought perosnally that while parry proved his utter incompetance so many times, not the least of which was hicks due diligence, telling villa where to go for barry was one thing h e did do right.... buying keane so late i nthe window for 19.5million was crazy.

but rafa did want keane. he said as much.

I do agree here with what skertl has said about the progress thus far under henry. they have done nothing bad at this point so we can only await with baited breath the stadium update (see henry's twitter) and the next signings.... i just think asking a question about what other clubs may be thinking is no bad thing. I hope comolli is seen as walking away from adam if we don't bid for him at all rather than some press line about us not affording him. I'd like somone at the club to just defend our business position in a gneral way the next time a question on a player is brought up in an interivew.... eg, "i'm not commenting on any clubs player but if in general the fee is wrong or the players demands are over the odds we walk away."

My understanding (and Rafa's quote) was that he wanted Barry, and once Barry was signed then to go get Keane. Barry was the key to the partnership and the priority signing.

Parry bought Keane and didn't get Barry, so Keane became collateral damage as the strategy wasn't able to be implemented.

redconn this is what rafa said... but ergo he wanted and discussed keane with parry.... we all know parry was incompetant but to him he got 50% of what rafa wanted and after all alonso then played a stormer all year.

to me yes keane became collateral damage but hey he got his signing on fees lol....

to me that strategy... barry and keane for near enough 40mil to be offest by losing alonso to juve for 16mil.... added to the aquilani disaster... well it's no wonder we ended up 7th.

thats history i guess, skertl is right that we've got kenny, the new owners and the slate wiped as far as it can be. lots of dead wood to be chopped now and so we all look forward to the developments ove rthe next 2/3 transfer windows...

The original question was one regarding an emerging pattern so bar one person i don't see too many people outright disagreeing with it. we're talking lots of topics. so how about it do you agree or disagree with the pattern i highlighted?

(even i don't know if it is one i'd stand over yet)
