Leicester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson will step up his bid to sign Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard as he awaits news on the extent of David Nugent's injury.

City have until the transfer window closes at 11pm on Wednesday to land Maynard or another striker.

Eriksson says he is confident a deal will materialise by then.

As reported in the Mercury last week, Eriksson will try to break the club's transfer record with a £6 million bid in a fourth attempt to land 24-year-old Maynard.

"We are still trying to take in a wide player or a striker and work will go on," said Eriksson. "I really hope we can do so."

Eriksson's need to bring in a new striker has become greater following Nugent's hamstring injury. The City boss is now waiting for the results of a scan. "We don't know at this stage how long David is going to be out, but we do know we have one more striker out of the picture, maybe, but I hope not," said Eriksson after his side's 3-2 victory over Southampton.

"I fear it might take more than one or two weeks, but we have to wait for the scan.

"It is a pity because he has been in very good shape and created many chances for us."

Nugent picked up the injury just six minutes into the game and the only saving grace for City is that they now have a two-week international break rather than having to go into games without one of their most influential players.

Eriksson said there was relief in the City camp as strikes from Darius Vassell, Richie Wellens and a Rickie Lambert own goal ensured a first home win of the campaign.

Eriksson said: "It was a good performance in the first half and their goalkeeper saved them on a couple of occasions, but we have to say the opposite was true in the second half. Kasper saved us a couple of times.

"I know Kasper and he could easily play in the Premier League and I'm happy he does not, as yet.

"We had a very good start, but their two goals were a bit unlucky and we hung on in there at the end and showed good spirit. Everything but a victory would have been very bad for everyone. I am very pleased. We won but we had to suffer for it."

Southampton were unhappy about City's third goal as defender Sol Bamba appeared to foul Rickie Lambert as he challenged for the ball, the Saints player heading the ball into his own net.

"We had bad luck at Forest last week but we were a little bit lucky with our third goal," added Eriksson. "I can understand how they are."
