BRAZILIAN club Internacional are looking for a fee in excess of £5million for Sunderland target Nacho Scocco. Scocco is one of three Argentine players on Sunderlandâs radar, with the Black Cats keeping tabs on both the winger and Catania goalkeeper Mariano Andujar, while they look to finalise a deal for centre-half Santiago Vergini. Sunderland made enquiries over Scoccoâs availability during the summer, after he netted 30 times during 46 appearances in a loan spell at Argentine side Newellâs Old Boys, before he joined Internacional in a deal worth around £4m. But after a fall-out at the Brazilian outfit, Scocco is expected to be on the move again this month, with both the 28-year-oldâs agent and his father confirming Sunderlandâs interest. Sources close to Internacional have indicated that the club want to more than recoup their outlay on the one-time Argentine international though and are looking for a fee of more than £5m. Sunderland, who cannot sign any more players on loan, would be wary of splashing out such a hefty figure, with the clubâs league position so precarious and their Premier League status in such significant jeopardy. But the Echo understands that Sunderland, who were yesterday linked with a move for Cataniaâs Argentinian striker Maxi Lopez, are working on adding to their attacking arsenal this month and have made headway with an overseas target. Internacionalâs asking price has scuppered Scoccoâs chances of moving to his homeland, either with River Plate or Newellâs Old Boys. But despite Scoccoâs agent indicating interest from La Liga outfit Valencia, Sunderland are thought to be the only European club who have made a formal enquiry with Internacional. The deal for Vergini is far more advanced, with Sunderland hopeful of tying up the formalities of the £500,000 deal. Vergini will join fellow new-signing Marcos Alonso at the Stadium of Light once Sunderland have finalised the move for the 25-year-old. It is thought that Vergini needs to tie up the details of his contract at Argentine outfit Estudiantes before he can complete his switch to the Stadium of Light. Meanwhile, Brighton boss Oscar Garcia insists the Seagulls are keen to keep Liam Bridcutt at the club despite the midfielder submitting a transfer request last week. Bridcutt, who missed Saturdayâs victory over Birmingham with a groin problem, asked to leave the Amex Stadium after Sunderland saw a bid of around £2million rejected for the 24-year-old. When asked whether Bridcutt would still be at the club at the end of the window, Garcia said: âI donât think anybody can say that about any player, maybe Messi or Ronaldo, but all the other players have a price. But we want to keep him because he is one of our main players.â
Despite the fact that January is now more than two weeks old, Sunderland are yet to make any real moves of note in a notoriously difficult time to buy other than the recent addition of Fiorentina’s left-back Marcos Alonso on loan for the season. With that said there has been plenty of speculation on Wearside as to potential new recruits on Gus Poyet’s radar to strengthen his relegation threatened side in his first transfer window in charge. Jack Baldwin of Hartlepool United is reportedly being tracked by Sunderland’s scouting team with former skipper Paul Bracewell reportedly keeping tabs on the progress of the twenty year-old central defender who has drawn comparisons to Liverpool legend turned dour pundit, Alan Hansen. Any move for Baldwin would certainly be a transfer for the future in the club’s development squad rather than the current starting eleven. Potential signings which would have more of an immediate impact on the squad include the persistent Poyet transfer target which has been muted since his arrival, Liam Bridcutt. Having worked together at Brighton, the midfielder would instantly understand Poyet’s philosophy and style of play and would immediately slot into the starting eleven you feel such is the Uruguayan’s admiration of the Scottish international who has previously stated he would sign even if he was manager of Real Madrid. Bridcutt has recently handed a transfer request in and has failed to feature over the last few games for Brighton which seems to indicate that a move is imminent. Other names in the frame include Argentine forward Igancio Scocco, currently plying his trade in Brazil with Internacional where he has struggled to settle since arriving in June and has expressed his desire to move. While Scocco’s recent record isn’t particularly great, just three goals in seventeen, it is worth noting that he managed an incredible thirty-six goals in 2013. Any move for a forward would certainly add fuel to the fire which is the speculation surrounding Steven Fletcher’s future on Wearside. Fletcher has recently been a target of Celtic, Hull and even Tottenham Hotspur if you believe the conjecture, although I’d personally be surprised if Sunderland were to offload at present. One transfer which is a lot further along than the gossip stage is that of Estudiantes’ central defender Santiago Vergini. It is expected that the defender will join on a similar deal to that of Marcos Alonso, a loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer. To make it a hat-trick of Argentine signings, Sunderland are also reportedly interested in Catania goalkeeper Mariano Andujar to help bolster options between the sticks. This is certainly an area of concern currently with Vito Mannone as Poyet’s only available experienced goalkeeper as Keiren Westwood’s season looks to be over with a shoulder injury which may yet require surgery. There is also talk of making Ki’s loan a more permanent deal which would easily be the best business of the window for Sunderland if they were able to pull it off.
There are NO major transfer dealing anywhere in the EPL so far. I think we have our targets and if they can't be brought in then we won't be dealing. I want to see a new striker but just getting one for the sake of it isn't very clever. Gus wants Bridcutt and Buckley and Brighton are playing hard ball. We seem to be chasing this lad Scocco but it may not happen overnight. So long as Gus gets what he wants by 31st January we should be happy.

The biggest problem of signing anyone from outside the PL is obviously the length of time it will take to settle in. And we need new signings to hit the ground running. That's my concern for signing overseas players in this window, especially given our position this season. I don't see the point in signing him for signing's sake! I'd much rather we get someone with PL, not necessarily playing here at the minute. Having said that, we are getting more goals from our non-strikers at the minute, so if Fletch and Jozy can find their scoring boots there may be no need to get anyone in this window. I guess they've got 3 games to find them, otherwise we may be panic buying on the 30th/31st. Alonso and Johno have been a revelation out wide in the last 2 games, providing more service up-front but I still think we need another creative mid-fielder, just in case Ki takes a knock or goes back (that could still happen).
Agree with what your saying sandy although it being January how hard is it to get a proven PL striker/attacking midfielder? I believe sometimes you need to look outside the box and if scocco is outside scratching to get in then let's have a crack. We have nothing to lose & everything to gain! Loving our ambitious displays ATM so let's follow through with it in the TFW! Just saying.
We have to be mindful of just how much ES has forked out already Aussie. I think that's one of the reasons for his perceived reluctance to splash out again (I'm just going on press and comments made here to be honest). If Gus brings in another dud striker it's just gonna stretch his patience further. He'll also want to unload some of the team this window and we don't seem to have clubs rushing our doors. He may take a 1 out - 1 in policy. Again, just speculating. Another thing to consider is that our results are improving and he may wait on the results of the next couple of games before making any decisions to splash the cash. If he's got a Wembley final booked and we're outside the bottom 3 by next Wednesday night, he may think he doesn't need to spend at all. Gus could be a victim of his own short success!

We need to play this right. They need shot him desperately by the sound of it. They're asking too much, trying to take advantage. But if we're offering too little, when they have no choice to accept a bid, Old Boys may be able to afford it. Surly we can outbid NOB and the others without caving in to 6m?
