I'll you what, this whole 5 subs thing is really starting to piss me off. I have no idea why PJ feels the need to have both Delaney and Ainsley on the bench. I mean, how are these players going to change a game in an attacking aspect. Having 5 subs really limits your options and I would like to see more versatile players on the bench. Peters can play wing or full back. Drury can probably play wing better than any of our starters today or central. Kennedy can play central midfield, full back or wing, could probably fill in at centre back if needed. Players like this can be deployed in various ways, increasing your options. I can see players like this becoming neccessary for teams. Being a jack of all trades but master of none might actually become a good thing. They changed the rule to help smaller clubs save money on wages, appearance fees etc but it is having an adverse affect on games and tactics. Would it be wrong to keep it at 7 subs and leave it up to the clubs to decide whether they want to have the full amount or not, depending on finances? Sure it's not a level playing field in some respects but a club should be able to run things their way and not be punished because there happens to be poorer teams in the league. Some clubs would just be happy to be in the Championship. You have to look after yourself in this world, nobody's going to bail me out if I make up a hash up spending all my wages and can't pay the bills are they? And before anyone says anything........yes I'm having a moan.
Don't get the problem, clubs like Brighton and soton are not moaning!! If you have decent players then its no problem, if you have a bunch of has beens........... Remember, you used to be allowed only a couple of subs!!
Don't buy it. Five subs is enough. A defender, a midfielder and two forward thinking players. This is where the likes of Micky Stockwell used to come into his own. But anyway players should be able to switch around the pitch a bit.
I guess what this article should say is that I'm pissed off at the choice of subs we had on the bench instead of the rule itself. Still think it's a bit limiting though. Instead of having a couple of utility players and a couple of specialists you have to play it a bit middle of the road and try to cover all eventualities with just a couple of players. Still hampers the ability to make a variety of tactical changes as needed, shutting up shop, needing a goal etc.
It's the same rule for everyone San Diego. If anything it's a leveller because it means rich clubs can't have 7 options on the bench while the poorer clubs have to fill the bench with youngsters or sub-standard players.
So Peters can play wing or full back, can he, who told you that? sorry this guy is nowhere near good enough, very poor marker, no player awareness, poor reader of the game. Pacey yes, full of guts, but you need more than that. Keep saying it, but sorry Drury will never be championship class, is well out of his depth.
Too many old players signed, one last pay day and golf holidays to look forward to.....You lot need young hungry blood to come in, not Ellington Bullard etc.....
He can play in those positions yes, but to not a higher enough level, have seen all his league games at P.R.and sorry have seen no evidence that he is anywhere near good enough for this level. Did not go to the Carling cup game against Northampton, but heard he blew it, big time.
Of course he blew it! He'd not played in six months and his career at the club depended on one game! He played an absolute blinder against Arsenal at Portman Road and hasn't been given a chance since, which is frankly as ridiculous as Hyam and O'Connor not being given a chance when idiots like Leadbitter and Martin are preferred.
People seem to write of Peters very easily yet forget that during a large period he was our first choice RB and hardly ever let us down. In general 5 subs should be a luxury. Its half a side that can sit on the bench and change a game! The seven last season was a complete joke. Part of the idea of football is brains and tactics and a bit of know how in relation to setting up a team, 7 subs meant you could pratically name a whole team on the bench and always have many options. The likes of Peters, Kennedy, JET can all play in 2 or more positions if required, Out of our starters On Sat you also have Murphy, Edwards & Collins who can play in more than 1 position and Cresswell who looks like he could play forward if required. Its how we use them thats the problem, not the numbers we have
