Robbie Savage has claimed the team from 2000 is better then the team of today. So lets see which team people prefer! This is the team that won the 2000 League Cup final against Tranmere Tim Flowers Frank Sinclair Gerry Taggart Matt Elliott Steve Guppy Muzzy Izzet Neil Lennon Robbie Savage Stefan Oakes Emile Heskey Tony Cottee Subs- Pegguy Arphexad, Phil Gilchrist, Theo Zagorakis, Andy Impey, Ian Marshall This is the team that beat Watford at the weekend Kasper Schmeichel Danny Simpson Robert Huth Wes Morgan Christian Fuchs Marc Albrighton N'Golo Kante Danny Drinkwater Jeff Schlupp Riyad Mahrez Jamie Vardy Subs- Mark Schwarzer, Ritchie De Laet, Yohan Benalouane, Andy King, Gokhan Inler, Nathan Dyer, Shinji Okazaki, Leonardo Ulloa Missing from that we have Andrej Kramaric I think there is more quality throughout and a lot more strength in depth this time. With O'Neill team is was built on strong and solid foundations while the squad now is built on pace and flair. We much more exciting to watch nowadays so overall I would take this squad. I would have loved to see Heskey and Vardy play together though
Is interesting to not that we played in a 3-5-2 formation then - would be interesting to compare it to ~NP's side last season. Guppy was one of the best crossers of the ball I have ever seen - can't remember how fast he was though.
What would be the combined side? Schmeichel Sinclair Elliott Taggart Guppy Lennon Izzet Kante Mahrez Vardy Heskey
Worshiped MON and the team he built & I certainly agree that the back 4 was better but apart from that I think that this current Ranieri/ Pearson team is far better !
... not sure that actually winning a trophy is relevant to the debate - Jimmy Bloomfield kept the club in the top flight for 7 consecutive years (the longest in our history) and built a side on a shoestring budget that were known s 'the entertainers' due to their free-flowing football ... the current side is probably the closest to that in terms of how exciting the football is ... I loved O'Neil, I loved winning the first trophy since I was 4 years old! ... but the football and all round quality of the squad was not, IMHO, quite as good as we are currently seeing
Hard to judge but if both teams were in their "prime", i think the current one would win. Mainly based on the fact that players now have more technological advances and are physically fitter/stronger. Long gone are the days where we'd play for 80 minutes and end up losing or drawing a match. Based on these 2 teams, if we go for the basic formation of 4-4-2, i'd go with the following combined: Tim Flowers Frank Sinclair - Gerry Taggart - Matt Elliott - Christian Fuchs Riyad Mahrez - Muzzy Izzet - N'Golo Kante - Steve Guppy Emile Heskey - Jamie Vardy Subs: Schmeichel, Huth, Drinkwater, Lennon, Savage, Cottee, Ulloa (Nb: I know he was winding down at this point, but i would take Walsh over Taggart)
Think this is an excellent team ... I'd have a couple different: Tim Flowers Pontus Kaamark - Gerry Taggart - Matt Elliott - Christian Fuchs Muzzy Izzet - Neil Lennon - N'Golo Kante - Riyad Mahrez Emile Heskey - Jamie Vardy
Flowers Walsh Elliot Taggart Albrighton Kante Drinkwater Guppy Izzett Vardy Heskey or Flowers Kaamark Elliot Taggart Fuchs Mahrez Kante Drinkwater Guppy Izzett Vardy
Thinking about it, wouldn't you just love Flowers in goal behind Elliott and Taggart right now? That's the difference between being a mid table side and one that could genuinely push for a Europa spot.
Neil Lennon would be the first name on the team sheet. Absolutely tireless midfielder who got us out of trouble no end of times. Kante is the closest thing I have seen to Lennie in a Leicester shirt, but Lennon would be in my Leicester team of all time (that I have seen).
Agreed - he's in mine .. in fact, I've paired him and Kante ... Lenny would sit whilst the fleeter of foot Kante would be free to join in the attacks ... the opposition midfield would never even see the ball
I think that the fact we can mirror players from our 2000 team shows what kind of place we are in now, like how Kante is one of the best ball winners since Lennon and Albrigton is one of the best crossers since Guppy.
