Yeah that's totally unacceptable. If they expect people to use the app it needs to be easy to use and any updates communicated by email. App updates are part and parcel of using a smartphone so that's not the issue. It's the lack of email communication and support available that's the problem...

The app should prompt you when you open it. If it doesn't go into Play Store or the Apple equivalent if you have an iPhone and update that way.
