Transfer Rumours Saints January Transfer Window Rumour Thread

It's not far from the realms of possibility that Man City come in with a £40m bid for VVD in January. Given what Beef has said, that there is a Gentlemans agreement in place that VVD can go if a bid in the region of £40m comes in. Would we then sell? Even in January?

 

He will be 33 in 12 days and is contracted until 2018. If we offered him a new contract it would mean we have a 35/36yr on £100k a week. We have no idea if he will suddenly break down this or next year due to his age, so it would be a hugh gamble. Now if his contract was running out next year I would agree he deserves a years extension. We have offered him the biggest wages we have offered to a player and he hasn't signed it.

Now why I said gulible is, if the fan is to be believed, Fonte said the club are basically forcing him to join United. That is utter bullshit. Fonte loved it when all the info was coming out about Utd had bid for him. He couldn't be arsed to tell fans he was staying etc. Yet now we are meant to believe the club are forcing him out. Forgetting he still has a contract until 2018.

 

I'm not sure they will, not in January.

I was pleased to see the extent to which your players improved once they started playing with Klyne, Lovren, Mane and Lallana your lot were **** until our boys got them playing.

 

A lot of this thread seems to be about Virgil leaving. What about players coming in? We always seem to get off radar players, so who can predict who we will be interested in. Does anyone KNOW anything, or are all our predictions just good guesses. As we desperately need goals from somewhere, who can we buy to provide them?

If that guy is right then.... Loaning a striker is crazy, we need to buy one. Two players? or two and a loan?

 

I'm not upset that we're not going to extend Fonte's contract, but I am annoyed that we haven't planned for a fairly predictable circumstance. We knew that i) we'd need a younger CB to replace Fonte within short order, either owing to departure or decreasing effectiveness, and ii) VVD would be in high demand, particularly if he has an attainable release clause/'gentleman's agreement'. This is something that ought to have been addressed this summer, when we could have integrated a new CB more slowly. Now, we're looking at the possibility of losing both our starters within a few months, and as our defense is the only thing keeping us afloat at the moment, we have to get those replacements absolutely right or we're in real trouble.

 

If Austin is indeed out for 3 months then we certainly need more than 1 'forward' in January. Boufal off to the ACON too...

I'm not holding my breath though. Prior to Austin injury I was only expecting replacements for Jay/Fonte if any were to leave.

We don't tend to do a lot of business in January.

I said the same and it is pretty obvious. For people that think nothing has changed, you just look at the amount of times Fonte is now used on our social media content. He use to be the go to guy, but this season we have had him speak a couple times max.

 

Makes even more sense for VVD to step in as Captain now.

 

Until the Summer....

 

6 months of a focused and in form VVD, or Fonte stropping behind the scenes and sending mixed messages in the press. Hmm.

Captain choice is an interesting one...
Fonte wants out.
VVD will likely be sold for a sum we believe to be c. £40m in the Summer.
S. Davis is 31 and is starting to play less regularly.
Romeu is only contracted until the end of next season.
The squad is pretty much rotated every game.

Who to pick....
a) Forster,
b) The loan striker from January,
c) Rotate the captaincy, may as well as we rotate the whole team so often.

 

It may not be true. But I'll be unsurprised if we only look to the loan market in January given the takeover behind the scenes.
