Yes it does. If a club bids £40m he is gone, that is the club value Van Dijk at.

So even if there isn't a real clause in his contract, there is a price were we will let him leave.

Well if that is the case then technically there isn't a release clause!
His value should be greater than that, it will only increase with all the hype that is already surrounding him.

I would like to think that the club value sucess on the pitch more than a profit

I would deem it a price were he is allowed to go. So instead of a written release clause, it is a gentlemans agreement that he can go if the fee is matched.

Not a profit. It's how we get players to sign new deals. Fans have to accept that for many players we are a stepping stone.

Contracts are meaningless in football, they effectively just dictate the selling price of a player. By signing Van Dijk to a longer contract it just means we can get a higher fee for him

It's one thing to be a selling club , but surely , to sell players quickly does the the CLUB & FANS no favours . What about STABILITY . I will say this just once , I can see us getting relegated this year or next , but I can see it happening . END OF .

This worries me. My view is that a player only really needs their agent when a) negotiating on a new contract or b) looking for a new club.

Well he's just signed an excellent new contract so it's not going be option a).

We are in the PL the most boring league in the world despite what the media love to ram down our throats. We are in a group of about 10 teams that will swap places in league position each year, having the odd "good" season flirting with the top 4/6. And the odd bad season where we finish closer to relegation. This cycle goes on until you get relegated, it has happened to loads of clubs and most likely will happen to us aswell

Stability isn't possible at a stepping stone club when players hold the cards. If we start digging our heels in, it creates instability if anything (see Lovren, Lallana, Fonte etc for details).

So, if we are in a mini league with c. 10 clubs who could all interchange positions, how come we seem unable to hold on as long as others do to their players?

Because as I and others have said before, who is playing for those other clubs the likes of Liverpool or Spurs would like? Please don't tell me that you're jealous of Watford being able to hold onto Deeney, or WBA being able to hold onto Yacob?

I wouldnt disagree, but I think that line is wearing well thin - you couldnt have chosen less desirable players if you tried Brendy. Maybe Im just having a delayed reaction to Thursday, but all clubs have good players as I have named many times before, but they keep them. How about Stoke with Shaquiri, Aurnoutovic, Bojan - they are desirable. Everton have kept Lukaku for a couple of seasons, Palace kept Bolasie for a few seasons, so sorry I just dont buy that arugument...

Those Stoke players have been at big clubs before. And generally failed. They're too inconsistent, too selfish, and no doubt on high wages already. Just because they show a bit of magic once in a blue moon does not mean that a big club will sign them.

Palace did keep Bolasie for three seasons in the PL, yes. In which time he scored a total of NINE goals. Wow. And they've lost him now anyway. (We managed to keep Morgan for the same amount of time, if you want to compare us with others. And he scored more!)

Everton, I will give you Everton. I always concede to Everton. Yes they have sold players over the years, but more often than not they have kept hold of them. I've never quite understood how, but it's always left me both impressed and jealous. They are a bigger, more established club than the likes of Stoke, WBA and Palace, but I'd still have expected them to have lost a few extra players in recent years.
