Sunderland simply wouldn't sell defoe as they would pretty much be accepting relegation. Also it would be stupid to waste money on a 34 year old. Hernandez is mainly just a finisher as well, people seem to want a striker that offer's more than just a good finish as that's what we have in Austin.
Part of me thinks it would be best to go for someone like Werner in the summer. Although that may be too ambitious as some top clubs will no doubt be after him and RB may not want to sell with 3 years left on his contract.

I'd agree with that. I'd like us to make a move for Scott Hogan of Brentford, 24 and proving to be a real handful in the Championship. With his contract up next year he should be someone we would be interested in. Besides he's used to playing in red and white stripes

Austin is a perfectly good striker. He's scored half our league goals for ****'s sake. Half the time he gets the ball and there's no Saints player within 20 yards of him. With players around him to support him, pick up his knock downs, offer him a passing option and provide an alternative goal threat he woukd work just fine. Add another striking option to the squad and we can take him off or drop him when it's not working.

We don't have that though. Tadic works best out wide and creates goals but doesn't score many, Redmond has not really worked out (so far) and Boufal is finding his feet in the league. I feel dirty saying this but at this point I might get even accept us signing a Kevin Nolan type player who offered little except a goal threat from midfield.

He's only 22 though. Promising young players like Mane, Hojberg, Boufal, Redmond are what we mostly buy. That's where we are shopping in the transfer market. That won't change any time soon, nor should it imo. Don't see us making a cheeky bid for Eden Hazard or Luis Suarez

I agree with that, I still think Redmond has potential.

My concern is his attitude may hold him back. Slating Bertrand barely 5 minutes into the game royally pissed me off.

You couldn't have been. If you were you would be applauding his all round game and generally superb performance rather than slating his lack of goals. Unless you're utterly clueless of course. I bet you're the kind to boo as well?

No, we most certainly are not. And we weren't last year when this was argued, and we weren't the year before when the same was suggested. It's a convenient fiction that allows some to ignore the fact that we could have shored up our weaknesses, but decided that we didn't want to spend the cash.

And if we're close to the drop line before January ends, threatening the sale, we'll see just how much of a fiction it is. Suddenly, we'll have the wages for that (probably on-loan) depth to keep the team up.

There are arguments in favour of the club's financial acumen, don't get me wrong. But they aren't "they totally want to shell out money, but are held back by FFP". Not even a hint.

Yes, I boo constantly. I boo even before the game has started. I wake up in the morning and you know what, I have a good boo. It's invigorating.

Just a thought. How about Wenger doing us a solid, and loan us, Oliver Giroud? I think he could do very well with Saints

No thanks to shaqiri. He would be an improvement but we could do better for the money we would have to spend.

VVD has just signed up with the same agency Koeman changed to when he saw the £££s at Everton.

I find it weird to say this, and I don't believe he's going anywhere in January, but I'll bear VVD no ill will should he go, because actually he's far too good for us.

I kinda agree... you know it's depressing when you think that about your own club! Don't think it will be January either but will be astounded if he's still with us post Summer.

Someone in the ground last night said that he's our best, defender, midfielder and striker <laugh>

It's hard to see VVD at the club next season. Problem is we'll most likely be facing having to find two new CBs with Fontes future at the club looking far from certain. There's going to be a lot of work to be done in the summer so we really need the takeover sorted asap. It seems unlikely that we'll spend any money in January, so perhaps some loans are the best we can hope for.

Doesn't hurt in that regard that it'll likely be a fairly swift process. If his release clause is 40m, as has been suggested, there won't be any forcing out; it'll get triggered, he'll negotiate a deal, and that will be that.
