Did anyone see the recent BBC 4 doc about Beitar Jerusalem FC and their signing of two Muslim Chechnyan players ? Makes fascinating viewing as well worth a watch. Maybe Karl Henry hasn't got it so bad after all
When Sadayev scored, and many of the fans left in protest, it reminded me a bit of the Chelsea fans who refused to cheer when a black player scored for England (a minority of course).....all very sad.
I stumbled on it just before he scored for his team. An incredible story. Perhaps world politicians should look at this before they think they will be able to solve problems in the Middle East. Or anywhere else for that matter! Where do you start trying to overcome predjudice of that degree?
I was thinking the same at the end, Tel. Seems the hatred on BOTH sides is just too ingrained to ever find a solution.
Just finished watching it and found it both compelling and deeply disturbing. I'm fully aware that we have a racism problem in Britain but jeez that was something else. An owner that doesn't give a **** about the club and is using it for his own political ends and bringing in two Chechen Muslim players. The goalkeeper who did nothing more than support his team mates was abused, threatened and eventually transferred, while the one player who supported the racism was made captain. We tend to view racism from within our own boundaries but this has opened my eyes. If you haven't watched it, you definitely should.
Can't watch the BBC iplayer from here. Shame. Sounds like an interesting programme. If anybody wants a recommendation for a good film, I went to see Sully last night. Really recommend it.
Interesting is one way of putting it! Thanks for posting, really glad I've seen it but can't say it was an enjoyable watch.
