The news of the City head coach’s extended deal was announced this evening at the Bristol Sport Gala Dinner, held in the Lansdown Restaurant. Johnson, 35, was handed the reins in February on a three-and-a-half-year deal, having managed Oldham Athletic and Barnsley previously. He helped steer City away from the Championship relegation zone, finishing the 2015/16 campaign in 18th place, 12 points clear of the drop zone. What followed was a summer packed with transfer activity, as 33 deals took place, with both incomings and outgoings at Ashton Gate. A promising start to the 2016/17 campaign, now in the ‘new’ 27,000-seater Ashton Gate, has prompted City’s board to reward Johnson with a further year’s extension. Johnson said: “From my point of view, I’m delighted and encouraged that Steve Lansdown and the Board have offered me this opportunity to extend my contract so early into my tenure. “It just confirms how happy I am about my time back here so far and shows we are doing something right. “I’ve really enjoyed my nine months in charge so far and the personal relationships I’ve built with the staff, board, players and supporters. I’d like to thank everyone who has made me feel so welcome since my return. “Like I said when I was appointed, Bristol City is the perfect club for me. We want to deliver success; everything about the club is progressive and that’s why I’m desperate to be a part of that in the long term.” City’s chief operating officer Mark Ashton said: “When I interviewed him for the head coach’s job, at the request of Steve, I instantly realised Lee was the right fit for the football club. “He clearly had an established history with the football club, and so did his family. “From day one he has delivered a genuine professionalism. He’s good, honest, fair but also tough to work with because we set high standards. “We demand the best from ourselves but also those around us. “Once we had secured our Championship status, the next step was to see how we would progress. “We had a busy and, I believe, a successful summer recruitment programme. The proof was then in the pudding to be able to knit that group together. “While I think the group is still learning and developing, it’s important to recognise those people who have played a part in achieving what we have so far. “This is a long-term project and that’s why I believe it was important to tie Lee down for another year. “We’ve recruited young, hungry players with a few experienced players around them. With that, it’s important to have stability in all areas of the football club to ensure that programme of delivery continues. Lee’s fundamental to that. “This deal is a balance of rewarding Lee but also for securing his services for a longer period of time. “There’s a lot of work to be done; we’re just at the start of what we’re trying to build. Signing one of the best midfielders in the league in Lee Tomlin, bringing in the likes of Abraham, Mags and Moore and keeping us in the play off hunt as the new year approaches, or how about we just go back 12 months and live in those days again.... Seems a bit over the top from me as we all know that a real run of bad form will get him his marching orders. What are they trying to prove other than faith in their manager who, quite frankly, hasn't yet earned his stripes when under duress. My prediction is that he won't see out the full term of this new contract.
Oh Redprintt mate, possibly not the best news you've had this year!! Not sure really what this means, like others have said, if we go into a relegation free-fall, the board will surely act. For my opinion for what it's worth, I think he is doing a reasonable job, no team in this very hard league have thrashed us, we are much better than last season and of course there is much room for improvement...I see us a middle of the table team at present, but would like to see progression towards playoffs setting us up for next season for the big push towards the premiership. Could turn out to be a bright young manager that we are lucky to have!
He's got himself a very good deal financially I'd say. But his contract is only a piece of paper and we all know that they are meaningless at times and can be ripped up in a heartbeat. The downside is that if he's sacked between now and 2020 then Lansdown will pick up the bill, so it's his choice I guess.

Not from those 7 games seeing 5 of them were away and one of the two home games were against Brighton. He picks a side for each match, he's not like some managers who will stubbornly refuse to change teams or tactics. Do you mean the 2.5 million player, which was stated at the time, was someone we bought for the future? Continuous one up front, well in half of the last 6 matches he has gone with two up front. And those 17 wins and 7 draws from 39 games equates to 1.48 pts per game, which over a 46 games season puts us on 68pts, which is flirting on the edge of the playoffs.
What manager does see out the end of their contract? Most will get sacked, some poached by bigger clubs. I'm pretty unmoved either way - I think he's done well over the course of his entire time here, though recent form has been a bit ropey. He experienced similar at Barnsley and turned them around, which is encouraging - he's so far earned the opportunity to build something and if it doesn't progress well enough, one extra year on his contract wouldn't be enough to keep him from get a P45.
