I see Gabriel Obertan is having a medical at our club! Now my brother, who is a Man Utd fan has done nothing but laugh at me over this prospective signing. Having seen Obertan play a fair few times, I share his belief that this signing has to be a cruel joke. However, what do you guys think?

Potentially a good player but needs to get some belief in himself.

If he gets it at Newcastle that £3million could be the best £3million you spend this summer!

Finally he is sold. Took some time. Thank you Newcastle, maybe we will give you a thankyou gift and throw Gibson in or is that too cheeky?

Its not just Newcastle, he regards the whole North East as a recycling centre, just ask the Mackems.

I disagree with your brothers assessment.

Obertan clearly has bags of skill and pace and could develop into one of the best wingers in the league. His lack of first team opportunities has slowed his development and this was probably owing to him failing to impress or work hard in training.

I can remember a game last season where he was sat in the stands with Giggs. Giggs was watching the game intently while Obertan was plugged into his iphone. You aren't going to dislodge players like Park, Valencia and Nani by doing things like that.

If Pardew can give him regular first team football and coax a better attitude from him, then Newcastle have just bagged a bargain at £3m.

Just wait and see. He is going to run rings around plenty of full-backs this season.

I dont think his attitude is the issue really, its 100% down to confidence, or lack of.

If AP can get in the guys head and make him believe in himself you will have the player most thought he was going to be for years in France.Tipped as better than Henry in his early days, the lads potential is frightening.
I seen him play V England under 21`s a few years back and he was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch. He has all the tricks in his locker, a great finish from distance and electrifying speed.

I genuinely hope we put a sell on fee or buy back clause in the contract because when it all clicks for Obertan(if it ever does) he will be a monster of a player.

Agreed. Obertan has the skill and pace to terrorise defences but there's something not right in his head. Could be a hell of a player if he wises up.

He isn't good enough for Man United but I reckon he will do a good job for Newcastle. He isn't amazing but he's probably an improvement on what you have.

If I were a Newcastle fan I'd be very worried about the prospect of relegation this season, particularly with all the players you've lost this summer, maybe Obertan could prove the difference in helping you guys stay up:biggrin:

Nolan and Routledge - don't believe everything you read in the press, we have sold 2 players and one spent half of last season out on loan, Nolan will be replaced by Ben Arfa, and Obertan is Routledge's replacement, we are stronger than last season and if it wasnt for a 92nd minute goal in the last game we would have finished 9th.
With addition of Cabaye, Ba and Marveux we will hopefully be building on a good season last year.

I think Ba will be fantastic for Newcastle this season.

When Man City were paying silly money for Dzeko, I remember Steve McLaren saying that Ba was twice the player Dzeko was, so I watched Ba closely and I was impressed by his performances for WH, he looks a really good player and if you can give him decent service I think he could be the deal of the summer.

Obertan is certainly no worse than the other 4 frog speaking nobodies you have signed during this transfer window and if he gets his head right ( don't mean the shape ! ) he could be your star playerthis season.

How is Ben Arfa coming along with his injuries? Quite sad that he broke his leg last season, looks quite a player.

Played twice in pre season but then went off with an ankle injury, back in september but will need time to get to full fitness as expected.
