We know what he's said on his social media and in direct press quotes.

He can't be far off being stripped of the captaincy. I can see Virgil being made captain sooner rather than later.

He'll be almost 35 by that point. Can see why the club haven't offered him a new deal as of yet.

Loads of speculation in the summer- he makes no comment- he is in the wrong.
Lots of speculation now for January- he uses social media to point out that the club have told him that there will be no contract extension- he's in the wrong.
I don't buy the "we owe him a contract " suggestion. EPL players earn a fortune with the contracts they sign. It's a normal part of the negotiations to look at the length of contract as £x per year x length dictates the value of it. Fonte will be looking for the biggest payday. The club will not want to spend more than it needs and commit long term to an older player. I hope that they work something out but it's all about the money.

My only comment on this really is that I'd rather not find ourselves in a position where it's 1 February, and Yoshida is a first choice CB for us and there's very little alternatives in the squad for him and Virgil.

I'd not adverse to selling Fonte - whether in January or in the summer - and moreover, as I always say on here, I could not give two hoots about the circumstances (positive or negative) under which he is sold, if he is. I support Saints, so I'll just move on and focus on the remaining players. But I don't want us to not replace to him. It would be vital that we bring a CB in. (Similar in many ways to Pelle. I wasn't fussed about him being sold either, but I absolutely was fussed - and still am - about him not being replaced).

I find it interesting that the general view is that we should reward him handsomely with a large contract, when his performances are inevitably on the decline. I would much rather spend that salary budget on keeping the current stars and future stars with the "Golden Handcuffs".
The club owes Fonte nothing, both have had an incredible voyage leading to Fontes being a Euro winner and he has been paid very well during all of that time reletive to his standing in the game at that point of time

Virgil screams captaincy material. Just a shame that, if he was handed it, it would only be for six months.

I think if Fonte goes in Jan, Virgil won't go in June/August.

I don't think we should extend his contract at this point. This has been going on since the summer when he had 2 years on his contract. In view of his age I would want Saints to leave it until his final year to see how he is playing. I agree about the wages which might be better spent elsewhere. We don't know at this stage and the club are right to judge things later. It's a shame Jose doesn't seem to understand that.

As I've said before I can see both sides.

I wonder how many would have been happy for Rickie to stay until retirement on pretty big wages though...
