The headline says more than the article. Fonte is merely saying he would like to play more....not surprising and not a criticism of Puel directly either. If there is assumed input from the club....it sounds like we weren't closing the door on an extended contract, but wanted to look at it season by season. This is uite usual with older players, but obviously Fonte wanted reassurances. Not sure why he didn't take the pay rise though....cut off his nose to spite his face perhaps.

 

I can't see us doing that...whilst we aren't Barcelona...we aren't chopped liver either. He was offered a better contract and accepted it.

 

I heard it was £25 and a packet of Dutch pancake mix

 

I'm guessing the offer of a wage increase would have necessitated Fonte signing a "new contract", confirming his acceptance of the pay rise, had he agreed, so I'm also guessing that he was offered a new contract, just not the one he wanted.
If that was the case, it is just wordplay, from Fonte, which I find rather disappointing.

 

Isn't it fascinating when you realise that fans who know **** all about some football contract matter but can talk endlessly about it as if they were the most informed people in the world. You even get newspapers and other clubs' fans in there stirring the pot for good measure from the same ignorant standpoint. Those computer football manager games have meant most fans can't now distinguish between reality and a computer game.

I haven't seen Virgil's or Jose's contract and I haven't been privy to private conversations between either of them with their agents or the clubs representatives and as for the bullshit in papers and blogs they know **** all either so I will give just wait and see what evolves.

On the other hand I might just have a chat with the bloke down the pub whose mate delivers cleaning supplies to the club and knows one of the contract cleaners who sometimes works at the club who has heard everything that is going on.

 

No one is 'feeling sorry' for him (bar the EL) just a lot of us can see both sides rather than board = whiter than white & player = bad.

Regarding not saying anything in the Summer why on earth would he? Espescially if he was under the impression he had been promised the move.

Also this whole thing about how he would have known via his agent is irrelevant. The point is (in his mind) he thought that he should have been told by the club itself which I happen to agree with. Think he deserved that much tbh.

To compare it to Lallana at the moment is just plain silly...

I hope he plays Thursday and scores a late winner.

 

I'm not sure i give a flying **** about Jose Fonte and his contract issues/non issues that make him a multi millionaire.

I always have and always will be a supporter of Southampton FC and cheer on the players who are selected to play.

If/when they leave, I have that flying **** feeling all over again...

 

I wasn't just on about this forum about feeling sorry for him. I also didn't say the board/Puel were 100% right. I am saying I hate players that open their mouths to the press.

Fonte is playing it how many other players have played it. He shut up when he thought he was getting a move aka Lallana, Morgan etc. But then he doesn't get a move so decides to start talking to the press just before the new transfer window opens. 99% of our players have done this when they wanted to leave.

That is why I compared it to Lallana, he was moaning to the press. Then went quiet as soon as he got his way.

 

I have no **** left to give either. I don't feel sorry about the way Fonte has been treated (allegedly) and I'm pretty meh about whether he stays - he's on a downward spiral in terms of performance, why should the club try to keep him longer than his current contract dictates?
If he gets a move that brings him a big payday, good luck to him but hes not important enough to try and use the possibility of a move to leverage an improved Saints contract.
Yoshi and VVD look a good partnership, I'd happily go with that as our first choice pairing.

 

If Jose's Instagram messages are genuine and to be believed, he says the story isn't true at all. The plot thickens.

 

He's saying the agreed fee isn't true and the offering of a contract. Fonte doesn't call a signing to get a payrise a contract.

 

What he is saying is being corrupted and turned around if I read it right, he says Saints have not yet offered him a Contract, people are saying that he said that Saints have told him that they will not be offering him a Contract, slightly different nuance.

 

That's imaginative.

But we have offered him a contract, a payrise still has to be in a contract form. Now if he said we haven't offered him a extension on his contract he would be correct.

No one is being crazy negative. People are just fed up with players going to the press all the time. I see nothing wrong with that.

 

No he did say that. He said "in fact I have been informed that Southampton will NOT be offering me a new contract."
