He wasn't exactly respecting us in the Summer...

 

The man was upset....wouldn't you be? Came to us in league 1... believing in us, then played virtually every game and was instrumental in two promotions. Then he isn't offered a contract extension....so Saints obviously don't see his future here...yet he is not informed of an offer from another club (Everton) who presumably would offer him a longer contract. He could have taken a pay rise, but was offended and showed it. And then the fans turned on him as if he was the bad guy...that must be a kick in the guts. I know the fans gave him love when he did come on the pitch, but the damage was done on twitter and other media. He commented at the time that he always gave his best as a professional and he was upset that fans thought he wouldn't. This has been a bad season for Fonte and I am very sad about that.

 

He does give his best, but should he realistically be expecting another year automatically to take him to 35. I dunno. I guess another year wouldn't be unreasonable.

 

It ludicrous to sell your first team CB in the middle of the season for a meagre sum of 5 million.

 

After all he has done, I think he does deserve to be treated well as a reward. I know he was paid, but his contribution was massive and he helped pull things together when Poch left. Must have been a big help to Koeman...hence why Everton wanted him. It's not like Jose has been a 5 minute wonder. He's playing well this season....is it so impossible to imagine he would get some game time in a couple of years. I suspect the size of his wage packet was the problem....the club didn't want him to be the highest paid player in 2/3 years time.

 

Is that set in stone or a rumour? You only do that for a respected member of staff passed his best...who you are trying to help move on.

 

It was reported in the Guardian so it probably has a lot of credibility.

Ok, but not in the middle of the season.

 

Just looked at the Guardian article....it mentions that he turned down a contract extension. Fonte has said himself that there wasn't a contract extension on the table, so it makes you doubt the rest. Unless we are about to sign a terrific CB, I cannot see us letting him go in January and for such a paltry sum. He'd fetch that from a glue factory. If he was refusing to play or being really disruptive, Saints might consider getting shot of him....but he isn't, is he? He'd play more games if he could.

The Ugly Inside's view. They are assuming that there is someone else in the pipeline....I hope that is true if Fonte goes. The author does make one valid point....in this day and age would Fonte's agent not be aware of Everton's offer. Perhaps Fonte's beef is that it wasn't discussed formally with him. Does raise the point....if a club doesn't want to sell you, do they have to inform you....when your agent is probably aware anyway and has set it up. Who knows....my head hurts.

 

He has the worlds number one super agent. He knew. Been growing tired of JF moody attitude for quite some time now, perhaps this is his way of making us not too sad that he's leaving. Its working.

 

De Telegraf in Netherlands is reporting "apparently" that there is a £25Million release clause in his contract. If this is accurate, Then Saints have really F****d up.

 

They got that from the made up mirror article.

 

See that's the obvious answer. But considering he is already one of our biggest earners and is 33 years old, how much of a wage increase will he actually get?

 

Saints should have just put an extra year or 2 in the contract offer in the summer. Extremely petty not to. Yes it would cost more but the amount of money we get from TV, 2 extra years to keep our captain and a club legend happy is nothing. It would get rid of all this media ****e and speculation that only distracts players and fans alike. We need 100% concentration on Thursday night and it is a shame we won't have that.
Should have been sorted out in the summer.

 

Is that because an apparent promise had been broken?

I can see both sides to be fair but think he's worth 1 extra year really when you take everything into account.

There is absolutely no way that Fonte didn't know about an offer from Everton if it was on the table. Maybe the club didn't call him up and tell him, but his agent would've known and told him.

It is similar to the Lambert situation n in my eyes. He is getting older and we probably will be looking to replace him this summer with a younger player who will eat into his playing time. Do you want to sit on the bench for spells here Jose or sit on the bench at Utd earning more money and playing for a much bigger team?

 

Fonte is saying that he wasn't informed by Saints about the Everton offer....not that he didn't know of it. Can you imagine knowing about it...getting all anticipatory....and Les just walks passed you whistling.

Perhaps he then stops and says 'Hey, Jose.'
'Yes, Uncle Les'.
'Nice hair.'

 

Nailed it. It's a no brainer for him.

 

Which is why I'm pretty sure we won't do it. He'll be off in the summer though.

Forgeting all the emotional stuff for a moment, why, given his age, would we offer him an extended contract at a higher rate of pay? And conversely, if he can get one last pay day eslewhere, then why wouldn't he? So if goes in the summer, everybody wins. Not if he goes in January though.
