Am I the only one who doesn't think we'll sign anyone?

I would be surprised if we did....although Saints are very good at keeping things secret. The only reason would be if a player we wanted appeared unexpectedly early, if the club feared relegation or we sold someone we had to replace. Only the first reason is possible IMO. The club don't fear relegation....they will see this as a challenging, but okay season. And I don't think we will sell in January....unless the creditors are at the door....and I doubt that. .

If Utd want Fonte, and we want to let him go, can we send him on in the last minute of added time, Thursday, and cup tie him?
Or does the knockout stage allow him to be named in a second team's squad?
I wouldn't do this to spite Fonte, but would certainly do it to weaken a potential rival in the latter stages of the competition. And to annoy Mourhino and Utd.

Mourinho is in our good books today. When asked why he put Fellaini on yesterday he said "Everton are not a team that play passing football anymore. Now they play direct football."

Nope. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we didn't sign anyone.

(At the very best, a utility squad player might come in, similar to a couple of January's ago)

Would depend heavily on the price. He seems to have lost his way in the last year or so. Little harm in taking a cheap punt, but nothing too excessive. Give me Miralles over Deulofeu any day.

Surely there must be some concern at the club that we have scored only 13 league goals and our away form is back to...well, the away form Saints fans are used to, on track for three, or so, wins all season.

I hardly call any of this a step forward if I'm being dispassionate. This doesn't mean that I think we should be top four and thrashing teams left right and centre but I was hoping for something a bit better in the EPL at this stage.

If the Press are right we are going to need two Centre backs to go with the prolific striker that we all know is essential. May be down to the Chinese Takeaway / over.

    League cup.

'A cup tied Jose Fonte watched from the stands as Virgil Van Dijk lifted the cup after his former team Southampton beat Manchester United on penalties...-

I'd be inclined to agree with you if we were out of both cup competitions. But, at the time of writing, we're not. (And things might get even better on that front later today, if a nice FA Cup draw comes our way).

We could yet win a cup (and qualify for Europe again as a result, whether that be the CL or the EL). If we do that, then I'd have no qualms with, for example, a 14th placed finish.

Yes the goalscoring is a major concern (and away games in particular are going to be difficult if you're not scoring many), but it's been obvious since the word go this season that that would be an issue. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. It's the one thing I cannot defend the club/board on. We needed a top striker and a goalscoring CM even before losing Pelle and Mane. To leave us this short was criminal, and (unless he authorised it) Puel can't be blamed for that in any way.

Said in the summer this season would be a low scoring affair. Lots of 1-0's & lots of hoping we will be on the right end of the majority. Nothing has changed for me, bar any real unfortunate situations occurring, we'll finish between 10th - 14th. That's why the cups are so important this term.
