Not really irrelevant if Germany starts to call its debts in and Italy's financial system collapses. This has far wider implications than the Austria vote for Europe.

You dont have a good record on guessing who will win a referendums/election, so I will take your guess as another fail.

Austrian election was nothing really, even thats was a Mail/Express load of crap. Its a symbolic posting than of any power.

The Italy one will be a big issue for the Euro, as I do believe Qatar was going to bail out a bank, subject to a yes vote.

Please feel free to show me where I have predicted the result of the Italian referendum.

Italy will not leave. The EU has bent its own rules before, as with Greece, to help bail out member states. It's highly likely they'll do the same again with Italy, if it becomes necessary.

Agree with you on this one Custard, from what I read Italy's finances are in a real mess. Its two largest banks could collapse without support from Germany (I didn't know about Qatar) and Germany keep threatening to pull the plug.

Not so sure Spain. Germany have their own problems and Merkel has started to take a tough stance. This could be bad news for Italy if she starts to call in her debts.

Having such high debt relative to GDP is a serious issue whether they'd voted yes/no on these reforms. I think, like Cameron, this offered Renzi a chance to get out and do something less stressful and more lucrative.

I think a far right leader winning in a country more German than Germany would have given huge momentum to Le Pen and other far right leaders. Renzi losing could easily just result in his party holding on until 2018, by which time the whole of Europe/EU/Eurozone could be completely different.

    Do you mean populist parties?

Being the party that backs the winning horse on a vote on electoral reform, which really like Brexit was a vote on whether or not people like the current PM, isn't the same as a hypothetical Italian EU referendum.

OK, if that's what's you believe, I won't argue with your logic. Personally, I dismissed the Austrian vote as not relevant, and don't believe it will make any difference to the French vote in particular. However, how the EU now deal with the Italian financial mess could potentially harm the EU, especially as it will have to break it's own rules on bailouts, which it set after the Greece fiasco.

It's unclear how it will all play out, but the Germans aren't in a position to take a financial hit.
It wasn't a surprise outcome, so the EU backroom.staff should have had time to put some sort of scheme together.
