At the end of the day, even though I actually think Fonte is having his best season for us for a while, he's 33 in a couple of weeks time. His best years should be behind him. Whereas someone like Smalling - six years Fonte's junior - is probably approaching them. And the last thing we want is to potentially be faced with having to replace both CBs at the same time (eg this summer coming).

Although I still struggle with the concept that Utd would actually want Fonte.

 

You're right, they should have held a gun to their heads and made them sign the contracts they were offered. Silly idiots on the Board.
