Killer drivers could face a lifetime jail sentence under new proposals put forward by the Government.

Currently the maximum prison sentence the court can impose for causing death by dangerous driving or careless driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is 14 years.

The average custodial sentence handed down in 2015 for causing death by careless or dangerous driving, however, was just under four years.

For causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving the maximum is five years; and for causing death by driving whilst unlicensed, disqualified or uninsured it is two years.

    ......................

    Too lenient or not?

I don't think you should get life for careless/inconsiderate driving.

Driving while using a mobile phone, as well as drink or drug driving, should be a life sentence with a minimum of 10 year. It's happening to much and tough sentences should stop a lot of people that do it.

There's no need for anyone to drink/drug drive but the alkies & junkies will still do it.

Personally i think the whole judicial system is too lenient. Rapists and even murderers can and have been freed after very short sentences, a few years in some cases.

IMO the punishment should fit the crime and a life sentence, should mean LIFE!!!!

    Agree 100%
A work colleague of mine was stabbed and killed by her husband, their young twins were in the house at the time and must have heard or even seen what was going on.
He got 9 years for manslaughter even though the court were told how he had tried to hack her head off with the knife.

He is now free having served his sentence.

It was shocking for everyone at the time. The kids were looked after by her parents, they will be about 16 now.
Manslaughter by diminished responsibility for stabbing his wife 30 times. He was sentenced to 9 years but was inside for about 5.
    Absolute joke of a sentence.

A mate of mine had a similar experience years ago poor sod. He came home from work to find his wife had been brutally stabbed to death and also raped for good measure, he was subsequently blamed cos our intelligent police force reckoned that 75% of murders are committed by close family members. Turns out it was a neighbour who was a 15 year old kid with a crush on his wife. He got 12 years but spent most of his 5 years (actual) sentence in a kids prison.

Nee justice in todays world mate which is very wrong.

The whole justice system in this country is broken and has been for donkeys years.

The sentences passed put should mean what it says, you get 10 years then you serve that term, none of this half off for behaving.

The prison system is broken, there overflowing at the moment then build more prisons, give blokes who work in the construction industry more jobs.

Stop this pussy footing around with prisoners, have harsher regimes inside prison, stamp out the drugs, phones etc and get back to how it was 50 years ago.

The Howard Reform prats were going on last week about the upturn in prison suicides, twenty or so in the past twelve months, good in my opinion that's 20 less we have to pay out to look after.

As for prison sentences for killer drivers, if there is evidence of drink\drugs or of outrageous driving then send them down, anyone of us can have a moments lack in concentration and have a crash, all deaths resulting dont warrant an automatic jail term but I'm all for letting the punishment fit the crime and for decades now the sentencing policies in this country have been utterly rank IMO. Rant over carry on lads.

I just did a quick search and found out that the landlord owners of the rented property where the family lived, claimed damages for the clean up of the house and drop in value. They demanded that the costs were to be paid from the dead victim's estate, leaving the kids with nothing.
    There is NO justice.
I hope that the landlords rot in hell - cruel b*****s!

The mobile phone thing infuriates me, I wouldn't mind if the police dished out instant 10 year bans for driving whilst on the phone. It's ridiculous, nobody needs to drive and be on the phone at the same time.

Killer, irresponsible drivers start early and just cannot exercise reasonable control when in charge of a travelling bomb as evidenced in:

More than 100 children held for drink-driving in Yorkshire

More than 100 children under 17 have been arrested for drink-driving in the Yorkshire and Humber region in the past five years, figures show.

A total of 332 under 18s were arrested by South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and Humberside police forces between 2010 and 2015.

Of those, 112 were 16 or under and the youngest - arrested in South Yorkshire - was just 12 years old.

The figures come as forces launch their Christmas anti-drink driving campaigns.

They were obtained by the BBC under the Freedom of Information Act.

The total number of arrests for drink-driving offences across the Yorkshire and Humber region has dropped 20% since 2010, with 3,615 arrests made last year.

That means that 860 fewer people were arrested in 2015 than in 2010.

A spokesperson for the road safety charity Brake said: "Drink driving remains one of the biggest killers on our roads, so it is incredibly concerning to see any driver getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"It is even more worrying that such a high number... who aren't old enough to drive legally are not only getting behind the wheel, but getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol.

"By choosing to behave so recklessly, they seriously endanger not only their own lives, but the lives of all road users."
