Nah he absolutely had the chance to stay. Nick Fry publicly accused him of disloyalty for leaving.
I see to remember there being more to it than that. They didn't exactly get his contract squared away early and things dragged on.
I think Jenson, quite rightly, was suggesting he should get a lot more money as he had 'sacrificed' a lot of salary for 2009 to help the teams finances and therefore should be duly rewarded for the success and that the team going forwards was going to have a lot more finances.
In the greedy world of F1, all that seems fair enough.
Clearly Mercedes and Brawn wanted Schumacher back, Brawn was quite happy to cash in his investment with Mercedes, so presumably whilst all this was going on I doubt Brawn was that bothered about keeping him, especially as his form slid away in the second half of the season.

I thought Brawn were dragging out contract negotiations and there was something about them being unwilling to up Button's wages after he'd agreed to take a pay cut after the team almost went belly up.
I'll have to go look, but I'm sure there was more to do with it than Button just upping and leaving for Macca.

Possibly. The Jenson staying at Mercedes thing does require him to sit through three years of poor cars before it would come good again. He's also spoken a lot about how much motivation he got against driving against a guy rated as highly as Hamilton, so Rosberg might not have held as much excitement for him.
Worst case scenario, he could have ended up swapping seats with Lewis for the start of 2013!
Once thing we can say for certain he should have done though is taken up that Ferrari offer from 2011 he mentioned in an interview recently. Wouldn't have won a title but at least would have ended his career with a few wins and podiums as opposed to.... McLaren Honda.
As for Schumacher according to Brawn in that long interview he did the other week, they hadn't even considered Michael until after it was obvious that Jenson was leaving, because they thought he'd never want to leave Ferrari.
So Rosberg wins a load of races, Lewis gives a quit threat then all of a sudden he wins a load of races and also a work around his engine penalty with upgraded parts. And people say Mercedes favour Rosberg?
Remind me, didn't Hamilton start from the back in accordance with the regulations regarding excess parts which wouldn't have been needed if the originals hadn't failed?
And then he has a engine failure in a race after all that.

The team favours no one, I truly believe this. Mercedes looks after Mercedes interests, end of. They know one of their drivers will win, they don't care which one, just as long as one wins and the other is second. If anything looks like it will jeopardise a 1-2 they want to step in.

It's hardly an advantage starting at the back is it? Bando was making it sound like changing his engine parts in one go was doing him a favour.
Am sure Mercedes would have been happier if the grid penalties weren't required.

Hamilton had reliability issues in the fist few events of the year and Rosberg wins. Hamilton then has no reliability issues for some time and generally beats Rosberg, as he generally has done the last few years. Not sure why he finds that surprising.

Yes Mercedes want a 1-2 every race but I bet they prefer their top marketing asset on top of it.
