I can see something happening, even if it is a part sale.

 

Saintsweb are confused. One says they've heard it's happening within 1 month and someone else has heard it's dead in the the water.

 

Interesting point that both Fonte and Van Dijk will need to be replaced with 2/3 years. We really need to avoid having to sing 2 new CB's and let them both settle in the same season. That is askiing for trouble.

We would get a lot more money for VVD, though. And Fonte has value outside of his contributions on the pitch. So that makes it hard to make a straight up comparison.

I don't disagree with your points, though. I wasn't advocating for selling VVD this summer, merely explaining why there could be logical reasons for doing so. Obviously if VVD is quite happy here then the stakes are changed and it would indeed take something incredible for us to move him.

But I have no idea what clubs might offer for VVD or Fonte, or how much they would agitate to leave, or who we have in minds as replacements. If we qualify for Champion's League maybe it becomes a moot point. Alternatively, we could be sold, not qualify even for Euro, and both VVD and Fonte are unhappy and force our hand and we end up with neither.

 

That is what everyone said at the start of the season after a sluggish start, however he has been outstanding alongside van Dijk in recent months. Surely only time will tell, English football is obsessed with youth and pace over experience and know-how.

 

If we sell him this summer then there's not much point getting excited about long contracts. I don't support [email protected]. Selling him for 50m would probably give Puel a £35m war chest the way we've gone lately...

With more and more clubs interested there will hopefully be a bidding war. Could (and should) get 50m minimum.

As I've said before I can't see any logical reason why VVD would've signed his new deal without some kind of assurances that he can leave if a certain amount is bid. Whether there is a timescale on when that clause can be activated will dictate when he leaves, but personally I think it will be in the summer

 

Few rumours that we are in for Dembele of Celtic. May be lazy journalism as we have bought a few Celtic players previously. Would've though he would attract bigger names but Van Dijk didn't so you never know.

 

Hes played well recently and he is a good player. He is taking more gambles as he lunges in more and grabs more... I wish it wasn't, but the clock is ticking. Father Time will win.

Yes, been saying this for a while and that's why I don't believe there's "any" chance of us selling him in Jan nor next summer. Now of course, if a stupid offer of £50M+ may tempt but otherwise, no way.
