Yep for all this Liverpool talk I can see City being his eventual destination. He would thrive in that set up...

Oh **** I mean... umm... nah he hasn't got what it takes to perform at big club <yikes>

Good! He is going to leave eventually. I just hope for three things:
    1. It won't be this season
    2. It will be for minimum £50m
    3. It won't be to bloody Liverpool!

Everyone is........with over 5 years left on contract it would take a silly offer for him to go next summer

I'm suprised people think he'll be here next year. Yeh he's on a long contract so we'll get a fair whack of cash for him but he's worth it so teams will almost definitely pay it (hes much better than stones...) and surely he'll want to go?
Not being pessimistic but I think he's probably at a higher level now than all the previous players who've left us, why would he stay?

Also surely he wouldn't have signed a five year deal unless he had some sort of assurance he would be able to leave if a good enough offer came in? Anyway we'll have him for this season and get a shed load for him next year, could definitely be worse!

Van Dijk won't leave in Jan. We also have to remember we are in takeover talks. Players won't be sold until it is sorted.

He stay because we have the power the reject offers as he is under contract. We will get the same amount of money whether it be end of this season or the end of next, so we may aswell get another year out of him.
I can't think of one logical reason we would sell him this season rather than next.

Based on the low mane fee probably 35m would do it

Don't worry, Virgil can defend. So that's not going to interest City or Pep.

Players like VVD, Hojbjerg, etc. come to Saints because we are a stepping stone. If you try to hold them here, then you will have a hard time attracting other young players.

Also, the club is hopefully looking at the long term. We probably would get similar amounts of money this season or next for VVD, but that's only part of the equation. The other part is what could we get with the VVD money? If there are a couple of fantastic targets the club has their eye on for summer 2017, then why not just pull the trigger this summer instead of waiting until 2018 where maybe the market looks less good?

No one we get will be as good as van dijk. If there is a quality CB that is going to move at the end of this season then we could afford to purchase without the Van Dijk money - we will have to as Fonte hasn't got too long left.
May aswell hang on to star players as long as possible whilst ensuring they still have long enough on their contract to command top dollar.

You are right but I think we will come up with the opposite answer. If the opportunity comes up to sign our no.1 choice CB I strongly think we should replace Jose. That gives him a season next to Virgil and another year to find our next target to replace him, if we have to. It will take something incredible to shift Virgil before summer 2018, as everyone will have been aware when he signed the contract.

I think the only way we keep Van Dijk is if the Chinese invest a hell of a lot of money into us. But I can't see this.

This is about spot on. It's why I don't understand it when fans batter the Board when someone goes. One could also add to your comments that the players can get their heads turned which throws something else into the mix.

I presume we signed him on a 6 year contract or whatever it was to ensure we kept him for another 3 or 4 years then sell him with 2 years left. If he really does go next summer then the long contracts from a fans perspective really do mean nothing. Of course I do fully expect us to sell him next summer probably for a lot less then figures banded on here
