Apparently he now thinks he is for sale.

Do people think it is still worth bringing him in at this relatively late stage of the window? With the season about to start he won't have that much time to get up to PL fitness levels, and is it worth the risk of possibly upsetting the balance of the side, which was pretty good against City with Cleverley and Ando in the middle.

I'd still like to see him in a Utd shirt for obvious reasons. But given how well we dominated City yesterday, even with Carrick being largely anonymous in the centre, do we need him to win the PL again? Bringing Sneijder in could help close the gap to Barca in Europe, but then again it could be another Veron style signing that just messes up the team and leaves us vulnerable in the league.

    Thoughts?

he is the kind of guy that we should be taking a gamble on, I say gamble purely because of the fee and the fact that he hasnt played in the prem before.
the fact is though in his position there arent many players who could be considered better than he is and if we were to sign him and he performs well the prem will be ours to lose.

Sneijder is an undoubted great player and one I hope to God if he signs he would settle in at OT. The Veron situation does concern me as despite his ability he didn't set the world on fire at Utd. It seems he doesn't know really where he will be playing in the medium to long term and the fact he claims he is for sale and isn't crying that he wishes to stay, suggests clearly he wants to go.

Could be worth a gamble this late on in the transfer window or how about waiting to January? Problem is Inter appear to need the cash and Utd may regret not signing him before January.

I'd say gamble on him but I'm not sure £35 million is good value for money and I'd be very unhappy if Nani was part of the deal. Give them Gibson :emoticon-0110-tongu

Buying any player is a risk, but £35M is way to high for a 27 year old with real future transfer value.*

*unless the dippers want to buy him at 32 for £25M

Frankly, if Sneijder wanted to play for us, this would be a done deal by now.

If he isn't committed, then I'm not bothered if we don't get him.

He can't do anything before Inter accept a bid for him. Not his fault

His second half performance in the super cup was quite poor, he looked like his head wasnt there at all.
I would like Sneijder at United but would hate to see Cleverley take a back step to include him.

Am I the only one that is worried at the amount of options that we have now? I know it's a good problem to have but here is all the forwards that SAF has at his disposal (this isn't done in any order of choice btw):
    Rooney
    Berbatov
    Hernandez
    Macheda
    Welbeck
    Diouf
    Owen

Now that is 7 forwards. And the best thing is that all of them have done well in pre-season. All of them. That is a headache and a half. Not to mention in midfield as well. Carrick is looking very settled, Anderson is just getting better and better and Cleverley has shown great attacking promise. Furthermore you have to take into consideration the return of Giggs, Park (who was superb in pre-season) and Fletcher.

However, I think you should put Giggs to one side. Not because he won't play or be anything other than brilliant for us but because you just don't know how long he is going to continue before retirement (although that doesn't look in sight at the moment).

Assuming that Obertan and Gibson are gone, that does leave a spot open for a new signing. But I've always maintained that while a midfielder brought in would be a good idea, Sneijder isn't the right man. I don't think we need a defensive mid in the mould of Mascherano say, but a more mobile version of Carrick. Someone that is strong, comfortable on the ball and can assert himself (Carrick should do more of the latter). One could argue that the perfect player to step up into this role is Tunniclife or Pogba (who I think will be great players for us) but will SAF give them many, if any chances at all this season?

It wouldn't surprise me if we didn't buy anyone else and look to slowly integrate Ryan or Pogba into that midfield slot that could be vacant from next season onwards.

Tunnicliffe is on loan for the season, at Peterborough, I think. It should do him a World of good to get a run of competitive first team Football.

Pogba will be a quality player, I have no doubt at all about that.

One of Kiko or Diouf will prob go out on loan, Kiko prob needs it more as Diouf has played regularly for Molde then BBurn.

    @Polarbear
    Rooney
Berbatov (if we do sign sneijder, then berbatov is done IMO-he will be sold to help fund sneijder joining. the way he performed in pre-season (badly) and the way hes been treated this year (worse) suggest noone would be unhappy with him leaving)
    Hernandez
Macheda (we should loan him out again, welbeck cant be held back by this guy,hes clearly not as good as he thinks he is).
    Welbeck
Diouf (maybe hold onto him for the season, but i wouldnt be gutted if he were loaned out/sold.
    Owen
and perhaps you are forgetting where we have lost the most players recently-ie CM - out go scholes, hargreaves and more than likely gibson, and only cleverley comes in? thats not enough IMO,especially when you consider who would be playing with him:
Anderson is finally starting to make his mark,so no problems there.
fletch still has his mstery illness, no idea when he'll get back to fitness/playing regularly at this late stage
carrick - still not happy hes in the team to be honest.i would have preferred him to be sold than o shea, who is a good deal more solid and probably scores more too.
giggs - on his last legs,he wont play as often as last season unless we get injuries
park - can and will play anywhere across the midfield 4/5 so no problem intergrating him there.its valencia that has to worry IMO.

we're well stocked everywhere except in sniejders position,so i dont see why we dont fill scholes' place with him.

I think you might have misunderstood what I was trying to get at.

It would be harsh for Berbatov to leave but I wouldn't begrudge him leaving, I think he has been treated badly but I don't think he will leave. Personally I think Macheda has really upped his game this pre-season. I wasn't a huge fan of his before but I think he could be the real deal. He and Welbeck have the potential to both be excellent players. Diouf has been really good as well so it would be extremely harsh to send him out on loan/sell him but he does look a good footballer.

Regarding the midfielders, I was trying to say that there places available in the squad for a midfielder or two. But I don't think we should get Sneijder. We don't need a direct Scholes replacement but Anderson is the best compromise. He is a modern attacking midfielder- i.e. box to box. He does have a good footballing brain and knows his responsibilities very well. And if we do buy someone, it shouldn't be a player like Scholes.

Granted, a lot depends on Fletcher and whether he can get back to full fitness and form but I really disagree with your view on Carrick. To me, his regular presence in the team from March onwards last season was a big reason why our football was much better.

Whenever I have seen a youth team game, I've liked the looks of Pogba but Tunniclife always seems to be better to me. I think I might be the only who thinks that, but both will be quality footballers.

I don't want us to sign Sneijder.

I think he is a great player but he seems to be a Big Time Charlie and will continually moan about how Milan is nicer than Manchester (ala Balotelli). Add to that the fact that his wife is a Dutch version of Posh Spice and wants her face in every paper and magazine.

I just don't want his ego to upset the balance of our team.

How is he a big time charlie? How do you knowhe'll moan about Manchester? I think if he has half a brain if he thinks Manchester is a poor place to live then he won't sign because unlike Balotelli he has a future at Inter. And as long his missus' influence doesn't start to negatively affect his game then I don't care. A lot of the WAGs are more or less opportunists who use their husbands' fame for their own ends. Coleen's whole career is based on just that but as long as Rooney performs I don't care. And how would his ego upset the balance of the team? That hasn't happened at any of the teams he's played for has it

Well if he took a page out of Vidic's book he'll just tell his woman to suck it up and deal with it because he wants to play for Man Utd.

It can't be that much of a problem, I mean they're Dutch after all and weather is pretty much the same over there.

Anyway BBC sport reported we've agreed a fee, a very senior source at Inter broke the news according to Ian McGarry.

    Let's wait for confirmation first.
