Congratulations too, to the Argentine Davis Cup team in winning the competition for the first time. 1500 Argentines were there to witness the event over there in Croatia. I do not know how many of them made the long trip from South America, save Maradonna. Lots of Argentines here in Spain and elsewhere in Europe.

So pleased for del Potro after his long injury lay-offs. He's going to be a tough one to beat next year and I wouldn't be surprised to see him winning a Slam...

You almost were gracious Tom <laugh>

I think we all know Lewis is the better driver, but Rosberg won the title. Just like Leicester did.

Hamilton had to do what he did. The team were wrong to coach him at that point. He wanted to win the title.

It was driving me mad him doing it but he had to, so fair enough. I was actually hoping Vettel would go past them both!

Don't get me wrong, Rosberg won the title on merit. Every driver has mechanical issues and it happened to be Lewis's turn at the wrong moment. I did forget about Lewis's disastrous qualifying in Baku as well.

Hamilton is the better driver as has been shown by how close he got to winning the title again after falling behind, but in any competitive sport there will be moments that go in your favour....especially in a sport that relies on a machine as well. Look at Murray...won because he is one of the two best tennis players in the world, but was helped by Djokovic's problems. Still a Champion though....as is Rosberg and (as Fats pointed out) Leicester.

    BBC Sports personality contenders:
    Nicola Adams - Boxer
Gareth Bale - no idea what he does
    Alistair Brownlee - Triathlete
    Sophie Christiansen - Equestrian
    Kadeena Cox - Athlete/Cyclist
    Mo Farah - Athlete
    Jason Kenny - Cyclist
    Laura Kenny - Cyclist
    Andy Murray - Tennis
    Adam Peaty - Swimmer
    Kate Richardson-Walsh - Hockey
    Nick Skelton - Equestrian
    Dame Sarah Storey - Cyclist
    Jamie Vardy - Footballer
    Max Whitlock - Gymnast
    Danny Willett - Golfer

Some good choices in there but Andy Murray looks the winner for me. Wimbledon, Olympics and world number one.

Yeah, if Andy wasn't in it then for me it would be close between Mo and Max Whitlock.

I could always show you a few clips of Gareth Bale from the summer if you want, just for information sake, of course... :p

4 years from now it will be Laura Kenny, who will have by then become the most successful Olympian of all time. She almost deserves SPOTY now, but no one will beat Andy Murray this year.

Mo Farah for me. Multiple Olympic and World Champion. The British public have already recognised Andy Murray's achievements twice already as SPOTY, and rightly so. however it is time for the public to recognise Mo's phenominal achievements.

That's true. It's someone else's turn. Mo is definitely a good choice.

I note that Sky are sacking Nick Collins, their Chief Reporter, because they have paid so much for EPL rights and have to make savings. How much was he on for heaven's sake! Shame as he is a good reporter....won't be out of work for long.

Did you notice that Gareth southgate made a special mention of him at his pressie this afternoon? He finished on a tribute to him.

Nick Collins is well respected within the FA....he has been given special access to the England squad before. He's not the only one being 'let go'.....they have called back a member of the group covering the England tour of India for instance. First sign that the EPL may not be able to squeeze Sky for ever, perhaps.

    Nico Rosberg retires.

Good luck to him. Says he's reached his peak and now wants to concentrate on his family.
