Born Woodmansey. Moved to Sutton when I was ten and finally got to watch City. Left for Huddersfield in 1981 and landed in Leicester in '82. This was the time when bastard Tories like Norman Tebbit was telling northerners they had to move to find employment. I did and I did.
When it's quiet in our showroom, especially on Sunday's in November and December, we still play walley to see who leaves early
My schools kind of went the same way. Well, ish. Dales on North Bransholme. Still there but not a school now I believe. 5th ave. Knocked down and rebuilt. William Gee. Knocked down. Weird driving past that place a couple of years back. The old crumblies living around Bishop Alcock Rd must've thought Xmas came early when that place shut.
Arf. Must bring back all those school memories of when you wanted to work in a showroom when you grew up (I wanted to be an astronomer. I have a Nasa badge on my fork lift truck tho).
What I don't remember is Buckingham Street and Roborough St. What I do remember is Kettlewell Close on Bransholme, Ellerburn Ave north Hull, Sutton Rd North Hull. My formative years were defs Bransholme tho. Probs as my earliest memories are there. Remember my Christmas's, birthdays etc. All about Star Wars toys, the A Team and Airwolf. Snow and fireworks. My first computer, Sinclair Spectrum +2, bmx with red handles, being fit as hell to ascend trees and look over the rooftops. Halcyon days. Salad years. To this day, my fave Madonna track is 'Live to Tell'. That comes on and I'm instantly transported to 80s Pennine Way. Brilliant.
Was it you who nicked the prize cricket ball our head kicked off about Filey? I might have known your brother if he's aged around 52 now?
No kemps. I Hate Cricket goes back to being hit with cricket ball on my head when about 11 Come to think of it it might have done more damage then I thought.
Some of the schools had the same design building as 5th Ave (Eastfield, Endike, Hall Road, etc) but they've all been knocked down and rebuilt apart from Hall Road.
How old are you greeny? I was just looking at a picture of longhill football team 76. We beat them in the Cup Final.
Perth Street,Chants Ave from 46/58, then 59/70 Goddard Ave. Then four years Exmouth Street, down South twenty odd years and now Derbyshire. Just like many more going back to Hull is Going Home.
Before it became William Gee it was a very successful school.A friend of mine taught there before and after and eventually ended up in the disaster that was Endeavour. Needless to say the local Labour MP who campaigned for the successful Hull Grammar School to be turned into a comprehensive, and called the day it closed the happiest day of his life, didn' t send his kids to a comprehensive when the time came but paid for them to go to Ampleforth College miles away.
That 4-0 at the Den was at the end of Terry Neill's first season. Only about 30 City fans there. Things got interesting when one of our lot decided to hurl some abuse at Harry Cripps.
What were they thinking with a lot of them. Hull Grammar School used to have one of the best pass rates in the country but thanks to McNamara it got shut down and became a disaster.
I grew up locally before upping sticks and settling elsewhere. Stayed put before heading backwards several years later; albeit to a nearby place with fewer people than where I started.
