Same here mate, I saw most of his games at Roker Park and a few away, during his reign, I have also had the pleasure of meeting him in later years, Charlie Hurley is truly a legend and always will be.
I was at that game, had to sneak a day off school to queue for Tickets, as can be seen on the video it was a full house and a great atmosphere, happy days indeed.
I'm having a stab at this but I can't understand why I've been unable to find any of the Press pictures with names Jimmy Monty, Len Ashurst, Cec Irwin, Charlie, Stan Anderson (not sure about this), George Mulhall ?, Martin Harvey and George Herd.
Having enlarged the picture your right about Harvey & Herd, can't be sure about the other two, is the one next to Charlie, Brian Usher, the other one looks like Bob Murray but obviously it isn't, stuck on those two, I couldn't find any pics with the full line up, you would think the club would have put one out. Thanks for the input.
I expected Stan Anderson to be there. He was a member of that Side till November 63 when he left to go north 12 miles. That's why I nominated him. My other 'contender' was Johnny Crossan. But it's not a clear picture and the shot seems to be taken from low down, none of which helps. I wasn't at all sure about George Mulhall either. Worried about my poor memory, I found a couple of old pictures of ME, taken about the same time. I'm unrecognisable too.
From L to R: Monty, Len Ashurst, Cec Irwin, Charlie Hurley, Stan Anderson, Brian Usher, Martin Harvey and George Herd
Well done, I know Jimmy McNab and Nick Sharkey have both passed away anybody have a clue to the whereabouts of Johnny Crossan, is he still alive? George Mulhall I last heard retired from management at Halifax Town a few years ago any ideas about him.
Read somewhere that he was running a pub back in Aberdeen area. He'll be pushing 80 now. There is a google site on "Where are they now Sunderland footballers" if anybody's curiosity is raised.
Another 'missing person' was Dickie Rooks. Last I heard he was living outside Houghton having done well from the building trade. But I suppose they are all getting on and some might not have been up to the trip.
From time to time suggestions would crop up that we might play them both. TWO Centre Half's. Total derision from the old timers and experts. You can't plat two Centre Half's they said. That would be ridiculous. Times change.
