Marshall has shipped 22 goals in 9 games. I'm not suggesting they were all his fault but his confidence and appetite for it all must be shot away. I think it's time to rest him. We could play either Jak or McGregor (he's fit now I think?) although Jak would be justifiably pissed off if he was overlooked.

I'm not sure I agree. Not based on yesterday. I didn't want Jak dropped and I don't think he did anything to warrant being dropped, but yesterday wasn't the fault of the goalkeeper, it was awful defending and profligate strikers that did us

The defence in front of Marshall has looked very shaky recently. Since Dawson has come back into the team for the Stoke match and taken over the captaincy the from Curtis, Davies' form has dipped a bit. Moving Harry into a central 3 did help us but highlighted some left side weakness from the loss of Robertson (who isn't great defensively).
Phelan needs to be brave and have the balls to drop Marshall and bring in either Greegsie or Jak.
If Jak isn't back in the side soon, I can see him leaving in January.

No it really isn't. He's just playing the proven quality keeper over the guy who's never been more than an unreliable backup.

There hasn't been a game all season where we've took something entirely thanks to the keeper. But Marshall was excellent against Southampton which played a big part in our win. Jak may also have played a big part in one of the wins earlier in the season, but you know with him there'll always be an absolute howler coming any time soon, and it's generally going to cost us a game, like it did against Arsenal. Whoever the manager was, and whatever the transfer fees involved were, there's no way Marshall would be behind Jak in the pecking order. It's equivalent to complaining that Meyler is behind Livermore in the pecking order. Of course he is, because he's not as good.

Do you think Marshall was at fault for their second goal?

He did, but too often we hang on one good performance to back up our reasoning. Neither are bad keepers, one is obviously better than the other but you want the one that's playing the best and that was Jak before he was dropped.

Exactly, neither are bad keepers and we aren't losing matches solely to goal-keeping errors - the malaise runs far deeper than who plays in ****ing goal.

Funny how as soon as Tymon went off we crumbled. If nothing else, it shows that Clucas' days at LB should be over.

I didn't when I saw it and was pretty surprised to see Shearer heaping blame on him. I thought it was a good finish. Wish our strikers could hit a ball like that.

This is not solely about the ability of a keeper per se. Its about the defences confidence in what is behind them and from what I can see and early season performances that confidence and belief in Jak is higher. I have yet to see Marshall stand up for this club and be counted. I want Jak screaming at his back 4 and indeed everyone else.

We didn't crumble when he went off, we were already 2-0 down.

We were still in the game, though, we were at least getting forward and keeping the ball. That left side is badly protected, whoever plays at LB gets no protection from the bloke in front.

That's the problem we are playing games with 3 at the back (Elmo being useless), when we play clucas at lb we are down to 2 natural defenders.

Marshall should have saved the 2nd, other than that when we defend like we did what's he suppose to do

    Let's see:

    - Clear pen on Watmore that should have been given
    - Flapped at a number of crosses that led to dangerous chances for Sunderland
    - Was poor in getting down to stop Defoe's shot
    - Was at direct fault for the second goal

Can't organise a defence to save his life. Has no passion or energy about him .Has conceded something like 25 goals in his first 8 games for the club.
