apart from the odd pootle around various parts on a steam train , the only time ive ever been on a train was to do the epic commute from Hull to Beverley for college , i only used the train because it was expensive and ONE ticket , per week was proof enough to claim a 5 days worth of travel expenses (which doubled my YTS allowance)

I read an article a few weeks back that the Germans will soon start to do away with
the cable system as the next generation engines will use a new type of power unit that
will generate the electricity to move the train, so Hull could be first to this.
    Don't hold your breath

I like travelling on train and do it fairly regularly
I haven't really looked into it, but why is the electrification from Selby to Hull that important?
It can't be a speed thing because it's so short a journey...would it allow different trains that would be quicker on the rest of the journey?...or what?

Small part of a bigger picture, it's no more or no less important than lot of other investments.
It's just that we don't seem to get them and so remain 'the end of the line' in terms of prestige/quality. We have the ancient faulty Ouse bridge at Selby, the 'go slow' over the mineworkings bear Donny and oit of date 'pacer' (titter) trains that were deemed too antiquated for the SE about twenty years ago.
Every time we get to Wembley (did I really just say that?) we have to wait till Mrs Hargreaves at Broomfleet and Mr Rogers at Oxmardyke can be persuaded to open crossing gates for the late return trains.
It's Mickey Mouse, lower league stuff and anyone travelling by train to Hull for the first time already gets the idea that we're a backwater.

    Ah ok
Late returns would be a big difference actually. I didn't realise it would solve that tbh

Electrification alone won't solve that one.
We will end up being the biggest city in Europe never to have had an electrified railway line.
Never mind, we can all use the 3 lane motorway- oops no we can't it peters out just after Goole.

Would get us on the same page as the rest of the major cities in the UK and Europe, transport -wise.
    Still playing catch up.

I know that, and I agree
But would a casual punter recognise anything actually practically better the first time they travelling on an electric line?

Why would it be a good thing to be the same as everywhere else?

Well, it would mean we weren't behind. The likelihood of being in front is extremely remote.
