Easily avoided by staying till the end, thus avoiding the crowds...

Just for anyone that might believe this, I can categorically call 'Bullshit'.

It's a nightmare getting out of there.

Last time twice I've been: A19 north till you go over River Wear, take slip road and turn right towards Stadium of Light along Wessington Way. Fifth roundabout has a right turn A1231 back over the river. Ignore that, keep going straight on towards the ground along Queens Road and park off to the left any road you want to take. Is about 10 minutes walk to the ground. Put SR52DU Southwick Police Station in satnav as a target area.

Go the A1018 coast way and park in centre, south of the river.

    Tesco Extra
    Newcastle Rd, Sunderland SR6 0DA

Short walk to SOL. Never had a problem there and the stadium police recommend it.

Allow plenty of time from the A19 to SOL (A1231) as a bridge is being built and the roadworks are dire.

most of their fans leave 20 minutes before the end so if you want to beat the crowds leave on 65 minutes

My mate is staying in Newcastle with his Mrs. Unfortunately no beer for me.but I get to take 3 lads to a KFC and suffer the resulting gasses or drive home with a window open.

Best tip is to reverse park. Use your mirrors, take your time and make sure you leave a gap at the front and back in case some **** blocks you in later in the day.

Parking tips, it really depends on what you want to do.

Park and Ride works well to get you there but it can be a long wait to get the bus back to your car. If you want this option come off the A19 just after you go over the River Wear and turn right at the roundabout the take either the second or third roundabout and park in one of the office car parks used for the match day parking. Avoid the retail park parking as that is limited to two hours and if you go over you get a parking ticket, as it is camera controlled you will be caught if you stay over. Its free parking and a free bus. This gets you in and out of Sunderland.

If you fancy a pint there is parking at the University £2 for the day, it all goes to charity, best pint is to be had in the ISIS at the Ship. They have a large range of ales on hand pump and a very large number of bottled ales and craft beers. Never any bother wood panelled real old-fashioned pub. You need to leave the pub about 20 mins before kick off and walk over the bridge to the ground to drink in the atmosphere.

If on the other hand you want to park and walk to the ground take the same route as the park and ride but keep heading towards the centre of the city until you come to a large traffic light controlled roundabout and take the third exit into a small industrial estate. You can park there and walk to the ground leave about 15 mins to walk. On the way out you are on the right side of the traffic lights to get away and miss at least some of the traffic.

hope this helps, enjoy the day and thanks in advance for the three points.

Sunderland was my final away day of my trip. I was actually meant to have a beer with OLM at half time but completely forgot. Could have been a fun experience given our more recent interactions on here! :p

My memories of Sunderland were that it wasn't actually that bad a place, I watched Arse-Liverpool in a pub beforehand, the one where Liverpool were up 3-0 after 30 mins or something like that. Not somewhere I'm rushing to go back to though.
