Hey everyone, Just wanted to know what everyone thought about David De Gea in goal today? Looking around some of the threads it seems alot of other fans feel he's quite poor just after his performance today. I don't quite agree! I felt today being his first competitive debut he played well, considering he probably was nervous etc. The first goal I thought he had no chance as the delivery was awesome from Silva. The second he could have done better but was caught off guard, but I don't blame him for it. All in all I felt his distribution from the back was great! His kicking and throwing is good and not to forget he is only 20! All I can say is he'll get better with experience!
He did brilliant, one poor, weak goal, which lets not beat around the bush has been his weakeness for 18 moths....longshots. He has let in alot in la liga, but it will be worked on and he will prve o be a great keeper
Our defence is better than Athletico's and he isn't the tallest keeper so reach could be a bit of a problem but I've no doubts that Eric Steele will get more than the best out of him. Regarding his distribution, he already looks far better in that respect that van der Sar ever was. When ever VDS collected the ball and ran towards the edge of the penalty box I always though "I beg you Edwin. DO NOT KICK IT OUT OF YOUR HANDS" because that aspect of his game was terrible. It is a good thing that all of our defenders are comfortable with the ball at his feet because de Gea does like to pass the ball out. I don't think it was nerves that resulted in the 2nd goal, I just think he was a bit late on it and underestimated the pace on it and the late swerve. It's always difficult to get the shots that are low but close to your body because you think do I go to collect or push it out with my legs/feet? But he should have saved it. But he never, ever looked nervous to me. A bit despondant after conceding the 2nd goal but he is a mighty fine keeper and will get better.
The focus is on De Gea, but to be fair he was let down by more experienced players in front of him. There was no way he could come for the first, Ferdinand got the wrong side of Lescott. The second was moving from the moment it left Dzeko's foot, De Gea decided to wait and got done by more late movement, but again Vidic should have closed down much quicker.
He did OK but really should have saved Dzeko's shot, it was a speculative strike at best. Other than that did OK. He'll come good I imagine, can't judge him on just one game
It wasnt a case of him being good or poor. He allowed the worst striker in football from january 2011 to score past him. To the stocks!
I think that tells you more about other fans to be honest. Maybe they've realised that they need him to be poor if they're to stand a reasonable chance of getting past us for the title this season. Given that many people have City down as the biggest threat to us next season, the fact that they needed two mistakes from us to score and still lost probably has the ABUs grasping for any straw they can find. The second one actually reminded me a lot of Messi's past VDS in the CL, although from further out. Both of them moved late and wrong footed the keeper, although the keeper should have done better for both. I think we're going to need to close players down better in midfield this season if we're to avoid conceding those types of goal, particularly with De Gea not being the best at stopping long shots. I'm pretty sure Torres wasn't playing today...
Once he learns the language and feels comfortable with his team mates im sure hell be the stand out keeper in the league. Being 20 in a new league were hardly anyone speaks the same language as you has got to be daunting no matter who you are.
He's obviously one for the future. Has a lot of talent, just as to put in the work to get better. IMO the reason Goalkeepers peak later than any other players in their respective positions is the decision making they have to make. I played goalkeeper growing up and I was taught to not think, react. If you think about whether or not to go for a ball, you're already beaten. When you go for a ball, whether it's a cross, through ball, or a shot, you have to commit 100%. De Gea would have saved Dzeko's goal if he went for it 100%. You could tell De Gea hesitated to dive for it.
Quite so...he's only 6'4''...btw i was playing golf in Portstewart,N.I. yesterday and met Teddy Sherringham and Steven Lomas, there for a testimonial for some guy victor hunter,in a local bar called the Portstewrat arms..they were mobbed by the localks, well teddy anyhow and then harry gregg appeared,He used to own a small hotel there. The man is a legend and takes no ****!!...he did say that bobby charlton was a c*** and a traitor..any older fans throw any light on that?...i certainly wasn't gonna push him!
I can remember Peter Schmeichel's first season in English football. Even he took a little while to adjust and he had even more experience. Give the kid a break.
Will make taibi look like peter shilton in no time. A ****in dud if ever i saw one and i know me footy
