If he inisists that nations pay more or get their own nuclear weapons then their much-loved position as leaders of the free world would have to be re-negotiated. Not likely to happen, once he realises there is a quid-pro-quo to surviving or influencing world events. His choice as Secretary of State could be interesting along with his foreign policy advisor.

You make it sound like NATO is doing America a favour by having them as members.

No one expects the likes of Denmark, Holland or Belgium to suddenly go shopping for nuclear weapons or develop their own, but the least they can do is provide enough conventional weapons to defend their own doorstep!

Don't really follow the the Media or thier scaremongering. I've got a brain, I looked up his policies myself. I wish the Brexit reff came after this election. My brains told me that, not listening to the media.

Could anyone bullet point the scare tactics the media are using because I honestly don't know what they've said. I don't want us cozying up to the US because I don't like them as a nation. I want nowt to do with them. The media hasn't told me that, experience has. **** the media, all they do is guess to the extreme to sell papers and get viewers. I can do that and say he'll start a nuke war but I'm not. I'd rather trade fair with a multitude of countries. Varaiety is the spice of life. I'd stimulate our Commonwealth partners economies than sit in the pocket of the yanks. **** the media and **** the yanks, they're both a set of wrong uns imo. want nowt to do with either.

Worked in NATO situations twice and at the time they all had ground troops and planes with the appropriate weaponry allocated to NATO within the framework that the US laid down. NATO stretches from Scandinavia to the Med and on my second tour I was part of a no-notice evaluation team that set high standards which in most cases were met. some better than others. Planes and bombs were mainly US manufactured so payment came through that route. The weakness in NATO though could be the eastern Med which is just where Russia are happily roaming at the minute. The South Pacific is on their doorstep though and I know for certain that China is strong in Fiji and Tonga, but they are not American.

Trump was talking from a stance of military ignorance and once he is enlightened his demands for paying their own way will diminish otherwise the US weapons industry will close down.

His spouting did get him the votes though.

Part of Trump's campaign was based on the likes of smaller countries paying more for the protection that the US provided. He even suggested that Japan should get their own nuclear weapons. It was mainly along the lines of getting Mexico paying for the wall etc. It resonated with the people he wanted to impress and worked for him.

Hope my answer to BM gives you some idea.

I've read about his campaign through his own outlets. That's how I've followed both. It's this mainstreem media bullshit I'm unaware of. This scaremongering. Are they saying there's going to be a war or something? My sleeping is reversed at the moment as i'm in the process of changing meds. I only got up 30 minutes ago. Got no idea what has been said today. I stayed up for the election result then let these meds take me to slumber. Tel is stressing media scaremongering. Just wondering what it is.

It has been all sweetness and light from both sides calling for Americans to pull together or heal etc. Immigration, walls and weapons not mentioned. For me he has achieved his first objective of getting elected so now he has gone off for Presidential, diplomatic and military dignity lessons. He will be a new man in January but his close team will be interesting.

Very interesting. He not really party alighted is he even though he stood as a republican. It's a tough job to implement change with senators on your side(as Obama found out) but he could well be fighting against all of the Senate and the House of Representatives. He's going to have such a close intimate circle round him it's clear he's going to be very hands on. just how much freedom of power he's going to have is going to be very interesting indeed.

I think its pretty certain that somebody somewhere is sitting on a goldmine of dirt concerning Trump. Even dirt that is impossible to prove will be enough to get him shifted. Cant see him lasting very long personally.

Possibly mate, there'll be something in the archives like a sex tape.

Then I assume Pence becomes president?

I suggested that a few pages back Tel. I reckon you'd get better odds on it happening than you'd have got for him winning it a few months ago!

I'm not sure how the American system would work if that actually happened. Would Pence swear the oath, would they need to re-nominate a new guy or would the next in succession (the Leader of the House?) swear it.

Perhaps one of our locals might know.
