Or indeed look closer to home, at the time of build the KC was the most expensive per seat stadium in the UK. It cost pretty much the same as the SoL with 24,000 fewer seats.
It was all part of the plan, they were going for a postmodernist, neo-industrial look ....... and let's be fair, it's a look they've certainly achieved.
It also has a consistently good lineup of quality music. I've never been mind (but then I don't live in Gateshead).
The cost of the KC as it was then called was never specified, it was just included in the total £43m, which included the Airco Arena, all weather pitches etc
Look at the better quality acts you get at Brixton academy with 5,000 capacity. There's nothing worth seeing on those small venue listings. But I expect a fair few on here will be excited at the prospect of some of that ****
I worked on the project, it cost £26m to build the stadium which was quoted in every communication that was ever sent to the media about it.
Are these big acts, I've never heard of most of them? (that's a serious question, I'm not exactly up on leading edge music nowadays) https://www.academymusicgroup.com/o2academybrixton/events/all
OT but I do love the way people forcefully make claims like you just did based on zero evidence, hoping that nobody out there knows different!
Get in touch with Wiki - they give it as £44m The figure usually bandied about in the media was £43m Bit of a media comms fail on someone's part if I may say so....
Can't really blame wiki, the people who built it claim the same figure... KC Stadium Home to Hull City AFC and Hull FC, Kingston Communications Stadium is a state of the art community sports complex that has elevated the city’s sports facilities into the 21st century. Key facts Date of opening - 2002 Total investment - £44.4m Main features - an all seated spectator arena with a capacity of 25,500 over 2000 sq. ft of conference and exhibition space corporate accommodation including 28 executive boxes, a restaurant overlooking the pitch, four banqueting or hospitality suites and the Viking FM bar
I think the key lines there are 'total investment' and 'community sports complex'. The £44m figure was never questioned, we were talking about the stadium cost and City Man said 'it was never specified' when I know it was - cos I specified it.
Leading edge like The Damned ?! Actually many of them are the same ones on the Leeds o2 list. I imagine the list of bands that won't play a 3500 seater, because it's not big enough, but are happy to play a 5000 seater must be fairly limited Dropkick Murphy's are good for a drunken sing along if you happen to be in Brixton by the way!
