And you cant tell me that 40 million for 2.500 permanent seats is not astronomical!!! Last time i looked we didnt live in London
Who said 10,000 plus was required? Perhaps when the new ice arena is built it will be built with 'multi purpose' in mind and that can be for small crowds like the proposed 'new venue' as at a 3,500 capacity - frankly I wouldn't even bother building it. We're just building small because we don't think of the bigger picture. We have a huge hinterland around Hull and surrounding area - 3,500 is ****. Everyone bangs on about 'facilities' seemingly forgetting that thousands, literally thousands descend on concerts outside, usually in the pissing rain where acoustics and sound quality are not particularly high on any agenda.
£7/8 million for 5,000 seat Ice Arena they say. Does the disparity in cost between that and the music venue not strike you as odd ???
It's overpriced, though it's not just the price for the music venue, it's a much larger site which is to be developed over time and includes a conference centre and a new multi-storey car-park etc. It shouldn't be costing so much and it shouldn't be so ****ing ugly, but neither of those things have any bearing on it being the right capacity.
One's a state of the art music facility, ones a big shed with a frozen floor, they're really not comparable.
Here's the bookings for the next month at a 13,000 seat venue and a 2,500 seat venue in Leeds, which do you think is better? Leeds Arena: Catherine Tate Show Elvis Live on Screen Michael Ball & Alfie Boe Jess Glyne Courteeners Mika Singh O2 Academy: Tom Odell Jack Garratt Nathaniel Ratliff The King is Back The Damned Brian Fallon Airborne Alabama 3 Pixies Levellers Saw Doctors Plus club nights every Friday and Saturday.
Personally think 5,000 tops would be right. But my main point is the cost. If its to be 3,500.thats fine but the cost isnt.
Some of the upcoming gigs at the 3,500 capacity O2 Apollo Manchester... The Catherine Tate Show Live Paul Simon Panic! At The Disco Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra Van Morrison The Human League The Saw Doctors Pixies Ocean Colour Scene Roy 'Chubby' Brown Busted James Arthur Elbow The Stranglers Sean Lock Deftones Anastacia Jimmy Carr
Have you seen what's proposed at the new venue? It's a full-on, music specific, state of the art auditorium, it's not just some big room with a stage at one end like you get at the Ice Arena.
The Sage in Gateshead cost £70m and has a capacity of 1,640, it depends on what you build and how you spec it.
