American striker Jozy Altidore is expected to undergo a medical and sign a four-year contract with Dutch club AZ Alkmaar on Wednesday according to NOS Sport. The 21-year-old striker has failed to find regular playing time in Europe since leaving Red Bull New York in 2008. Altidore signed for Villareal in June 2008 but failed to crack the first team regularly. The young striker was subsequently loaned out to Xerex, Hull City and most recently Turkish club Bursaspor, where he was unable to score on a regular basis. AZ finished the 2010-2011 Dutch Eredivisie in fourth place, earning them a spot in the 2011-12 UEFA Europa league third qualifying round. AZ will be hoping young Altidore will be able to fill the shoes of breakout Icelandic striker Kolbeinn Sigþórsson who was recently sold to Ajax Amsterdam. They paid them to take him. What amazes me is how he seems to perform on an international level but at club he is without doubt bloody useless. Didn't realise he's only 21, after his stint at AZ maybe Ferriby might have a use for him.
He went for 2 million Euro's - a big loss on the 7 million Villarreal paid for him - plus extras such as a 25% sell on clause. Jozy has scored 12 in 39 for the USA National team but most of these have come against minnows such as Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago and Ecuador. This surely has to be his last chance to knuckle down to some hard training and get the goals his fans are craving for. If he doesn't it could well be that the Mickey Mouse league will beckon again.
