If the government fail in this appeal to the Supreme Court, can they appeal then to the European Court?

If the EC refuses to rule in favour of Brexit, Britain can threaten to secede from Europe.

its nothing to do with EC (which doesn't exist if you are saying european community)

the european court of human rights is the only upper court to go to? this is not EU court but was founded before EEC/EC/EU with britian is founding memebr. the irony of may wanting to be out of this too is not lost on me.

All this is saying is westminister is the top dog not the god damn PM and her cronies.

You can't declare war as a PM so why should you effectively declare economic war on the EU on your own.

its an entirely separate debate to say that parliament could defy the will of the great unwashed that they lied to during the vote. IMO the high court upheld democracy in his decision.

Indeed it is and yet so many of those cheering it are conflating the two issues...including those that brought the case to court...funny that...

Why would decades of law need to be rewritten? I think you need to do some more reading! The expected way of dealing with the law side of brexit would be the "great repeal bill", which would firstly mean we are in control of our laws rather than the eu being able to trump them, but secondly make current EU law into UK law to avoid any gaps upon leaving the EU. It would then be up to our own government to repeal or change any individual laws inherited from the EU, after leaving. There is absolutely no need to rewrite any law within the two year period.

If my memory serves me correctly it was the official leave campaign lead by Tory MPs who promised the NHS money, not Farage.

Farage used it as well, as did ALL leave campaigners.

And what official leave campaign? <laugh> Just because Gove and Boris were there doesn't make it official. It also doesn't mean what they promised, they had ANY power to deliver, as was quite quickly borne out after the result. The Leave campaign was a hotch potch of clandestine alliances (as was the Remain campaign).

There were two separate leave campaigns, the official one was lead by Boris and Gove, Farage headed up the other. There were disagreements at the start as to which would become the official campaign and whether they would combine. I'm not just calling it official because of the personnel, it's a real thing <laugh>

Of course they didn't have any power to deliver what they were suggesting though, that should have been clear to everyone. They would need to be a leader of a majority government to actually be sure of delivering on what they were saying. It was all spoken about in absolutes instead of possibilities. The stuff that came out from both sides was absolutely ridiculous and I've got no idea why anyone believed most of the crap being spouted.

Edit: also I'm pretty sure Farage didn't push the £350 million for the NHS rubbish, and in particular didn't make any promises, if you can find a source I'll gladly admit I'm wrong though.

Hahahahahaha!!!!! Evidently not to the toothless, tattooed ****wits like Barnsley man "This should get rid of all those Muslims', Hartlepool man 'We will get our hospital back now, and they'll start opening up factories here', and Newport woman "The council had to close the public toilets because of that £350m a week we give to the EU'.

What SHOULD be clear is not always clear, by a long shot, to the homemade gun fraternity.

To be fair if there had been a decent Remain campaign they would've been able to point stuff like this out to the less aware members of the public and helped them come to the conclusion that the Leave campaign was mostly based on a load of nonsense. The blame must also be put on the 'Remain' party in this regard who miserably failed the country by not making the right arguments about why we should remain in the EU.

I think it was pointed out quite publicly that the £350m claim was a bare-faced lie. I don't know many Leavers, but I certainly made it clear to those I do that it was vote-grabbing nonsense - but it didn't stop them.
People will believe what they want to believe, regardless of the evidence. Politicians and tub-thumpers have always known that pandering to people's prejudices is much more effective than telling them the truth.

The best to be hoped for is 95% of money paid to eu is still paid to eu for access to eu open market. the financial services in London will be gutted and those regions who voted leave might get Half? what the eu paid them for existing.

I can't see better in the offing.

May knows in secret that irrespective of what she says in public a hard eu border with no free market will cripple UK and she will do a soft exit, claim the pound and ounce is back, fly a few spitfires over the cliffs of Dover while playing land of hope and glory.... everyone will be happy... for about 5mins
