“There isn’t any evidence to suggest there is any economic benefit to the royal family, any benefit mentioned is from assets that belong to the nation - like tourist attractions - which would still belong to the nation if the monarchy was abolished.”

People don't visit the UK because we have a monarchy, France is the most popular tourist destination in the world and they cut the head off their last King. If we got rid of those leeches then - as you correctly pointed out - all the buildings they use would be able to become tourist attractions in their own right.

No need to apologise, T. You are pretty much spot on with your assessment.

Yeah i read a report a while back that broke down what he monarchy actually brings and it turns out its **** all really, in terms of tourism

Where there is some benefit doesnt involve queenie, its the fashion industry, for example, for the ''kate effect''. So sad fat housewives buying kate look alike dresses from Primark

It's a myth perpetrated by the massive royal PR machine, WIndsor Castle is the most visited of the royal residences and it's only about 19th in the top 20 tourist attractions.

    It's good for tourism
This claim is untrue and irrelevant. Even VisitBritain, our national tourist agency, can't find any evidence for it.

Chester Zoo, Stonehenge and the Roman Baths are all more successful tourist attractions than Windsor Castle, which is the only occupied royal residence to attract visitors in large numbers. If Windsor Castle was included in the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) list of top attractions it would come in at number 24.

Research shows that tourists come here for our world class museums, beautiful scenery, fantastic shopping and captivating history - not because they might catch a glimpse of Prince Andrew.

In a republic, royal properties such as Buckingham Palace would be open all year round, so visitors that do want to explore our royal heritage would have even more opportunity to do so. But, even if the claim were true, do we really want the whims of visiting tourists to determine what kind of political system we have?

The Royal Family does not "work" for that money. The Royal Family does not sit inside Buckingham Palace from 9-5 every day, posing for pictures with tourists for $25 a pop. And even if they were, we certainly wouldn't pay them $50 million a year for that.
