Sunderland spark fears they are already preparing for relegation as Premier League strugglers axe staff
    • Sunderland have claimed just two points from their first 10 league games
    • The Black Cats have made the worst start in Premier League history
    • A number of the club's administration staff have been made redundant
    • This has sparked fears they are already preparing for relegation

Sunderland have made a number of staff redundant — sparking fears they are already preparing for relegation with the season less than three months old.

Sportsmail understands the workers, based on the administration side at the Stadium of Light, have been given their marching orders.

While there is no official confirmation that cost-cutting measures have begun due to the club accepting they will drop out of the Premier League, staff fear that is the case.

Sunderland have made a number of staff redundant, believed to be in administration roles

Following Saturday's 4-1 home defeat by Arsenal, Sunderland, who were booed off at full-time, remain bottom of the table with just two points.

Long-serving members of staff are among those who have been told they will be leaving the club.

A source said: 'It's been ruthless and it seems to be linked to the financial situation.
'There has been no official confirmation of why this has happened, but the worry among staff is that the club believe there is no chance of avoiding relegation and that they have started their cost cutting early. It's not great.'

Meanwhile, Sunderland manager David Moyes is set to serve a one-game touchline ban when his side travel to Bournemouth this weekend, Sportsmail understands.

Moyes will accept an FA charge of misconduct after he was sent off during his side's 1-0 defeat at Southampton in the EFL Cup last Wednesday.

Moyes admitted swearing at the fourth official.

My mate told me about this a few week ago. He speaks to a lad at the gym who seems to know someone at the club and everything he's told me has turned out true

So if it has been planned that far back then it cannot be linked to relegation preparation. 2+2 = 7, oh it is Sunderland so let's put the boot in.

This seems like jumping to conclusions to me. A few admin staff being fired = preparing for relegation is a stretch to say the least.

Hopefully it is the people who decide our away strips.

The last couple of seasons, I remember reading newspaper articles on the fallout from relegation and how clubs often have to lay people off because of the financial implications but in all of those stories it suggested that this didn't happen until the financial constraints of a lower division began to bite.

Had a relative through marriage who worked at the club when the last lot of redundancies happened and she had the job of dishing them out and poor lass was in bits. She was pretty closed mouth about the overall situation but at the time she did say that Bob Murray "added to their redundancy entitlement". A big gesture from a good man, so not always done heartlessly.

Well it must be Moyes fault.

If it's not entirely his fault he certainly isn't blameless.

10 years ago it happened, the Joplings club shop closed (I used to like going there) there is one upstairs in Debenhams, will that survive ?. The players on £30,000 + a week will be ok though they just jump ship as usual. I cannot see Short stopping here 5 mins if/when we go down he has to answer to this like Murray did.

Bri there are some that may well think that way,me I think I will blame Mick Buxton ( after E.Short by the way)
It is certainly a strange thing to happen so early into the season but having previously working for an American company, they are pretty leathal in wielding the axe!

IMO he carries very little given this is over half a decade in the making. Moyes hasn't forced the club to change manager every season, different DOF's, their scouts, back room teams, entire newly installed infrastructures scraped, paying out for it all so we're swimming in debt and unable to compete with out rivals. We deserve all this because it's a hell of a lot more than 10 game of football responsible for our problems. A hell of a lot.

Unfortunatley, football as a business doesn't follow the conventional capitalist business blue print.

To me there will be two short terms signs. If we lose our next two games and Moyes is still in charge this will signal that the managerial merry go round has ended and we will restructure in the Championship. Secondly, if there is a remote chance of us staying up in January and there is no spend....it's again we will restructure in the Championship. If you look at the Nags.....Ellis Short will see a Championship team with players on lower wages yet they had a crowd of nearly 50,000 (league cup) plus they are getting the parachute payments. He's got to be getting a hard on looking at that. Short knows that whatever the performances are....there's going to be 40,000 turning up to watch the grass grow. I think as a fan I want some transparency from the top of the club to know what the **** is going on and has been going on. It's the people who have worked hard for the money every week outside the luxury world of the professional footballer that is royally getting ****ed here? I just want answers to where everything is at? I may not like them but for being a fan for nearly 60 years I think it's the least I deserve......

We won't get close to the turnouts Newcastle get in the Championship. Had thing to say but it's something believe will be true. We won't get 40,000 week in week out. We'll drop to around 20k-25k I reckon.

any company who works to a 3 to 5 year business plan will run a series of scenarios in the event of huge change against that original business plan ( I know we do) So its not really a huge shock that Sunderland are looking at the impact now...rather than early next year when/if we find ourselves in a situation where relegation is a certainty. I don't think this has anything to do with Moyes, as has been mentioned, this has been coming for a while now, he just happens to be the incumbent when this all eventually caught up with the club. Having said that, I won't be too disappointed if he wasn't here for next season.

Or a new Chief Exec has arrived, taken the usual 90 days to get an understanding of the operational aspect of the business and has decided there can be changes to process which means he doesn't need as many people - happens all the time in many industries. Unfortunately, on the human side it's awful this is happening in the run up to Crimbo!

Danny Ings out for the season with another knee injury, I know he's a bindipper now but gotta feel for the lad.

I thought there'd be a chance he'd be loaned out to you lot in Jan as well.

Based on cup attendances and hype around each club. I could be wrong like but I think relegation will be akin to a mass fan exodus.
