I do have an opinion on why I think it's risen, but in my view it's a number of factors that combine, and I haven't the time right now to answer fully.

I will reply later. I just didn't want the guff from the others burying your reasonable post.

    I disagree somewhat, PNP.

Where I'd agree with you, is that I do believe that it was on the rise due to the pre referendum narrative. Especially that from Farage and UKIP. Ably assisted by The Fail and The Excess.

Where I slightly disagree is in that the success of the Brexit campaign now seems to have given some kind of justification, as they see it, for these morons to air their prejudices and racism far more openly. Much of the increase, as we have seen from evidence from posters here, is anecdotal. And much of it goes unreported unless violence is involved. Because it doesn't show up in any figures, doesn't mean it isn't happening.

So, In that aspect, yes, the pro Brexit vote is responsible, IMO.

I get what you mean NSIS, but it's a chicken-or-egg thing, for me.
Are people acting like this because of Brexit or do we have Brexit because people are acting like this?
I don't really know, but the intolerance and bigotry from sections of our media are a massive concern.

I don't think Brexit has created any more racists or bigots, no. But I do think it's emboldened a lot of them to publicly air their bigotry and/or xenophobia, as we saw in the rash of attacks on immigrants post the vote.

    True.
Hardly surprising when people are being treated like they're scrounging scum by the papers.

What Brexit has shown is that the racist and xenophobic element of our society has been largely silent as opposed to having changed their views due to education.

They've kept their beaks shut because openly expressing racist views was socially unacceptable.

The rise of the far right in recent years, aided and abetted by the Tory press, has made them think their views were more mainstream

The arrival of UKIP as a mainstream political party, gave them a vehicle to associate with. The view that our country's ills is down to the immigrants has been hammered home by both UKIP and the press, so Joe Bloggs the silent racist, now thinks his view is acceptable, chuck out the foreigners. The Brexit vote further bolstered their confidence, "We've got our country back" was the message, and these dolts lapped it up. UKIP had won the day, get rid of the immigrants was now a Nationally held opinion in their view. So they've increasingly crawled out from under rocks and dished out race hate to randoms.

Never has "you reap what you sow" been more apt. We've reverted back to a Nation where the xenophobes and racists feel empowered, and with justification given what they've been fed, especially in the run up to the vote.

I think that this might also explain the rise in other hate crimes, as there's been a big backlash against "PC nonsense".

Yep, it goes hand in hand. We've got our country back, we can do what we like.

I find it extremely sickening at just how high the level of resentment is towards people coming here to just try and better their families lives.

The dickhead element of our society has fallen for the "it's their fault" right wing mantra, that deflects from the reality of under funding and Govt mismanagement.

The feckless merely used it as the latest excuse for their fecklessness

You get caught out at least 20 times a day and you keep doing it.

You are not the official not606 jester.
