Don't do it - you know he'll quote some stat from a game he attended in 1897 or whenever when the average mackem crowd was around 247,000....

Did that article mention "European elite" and not take note of Sunderland's First Division title in 1936 nor the fact that since their joyous return to the PL in 2007 they have managed once to reach the top half of the PL finishing the heady heights of 10th in 2011.

If not can the article providing the info be reliable and trusted?

Evening Albert , for one year in the history of football Newcastle achieved 14th position in attendance , from my own PERSONAL experience I attended a game when more than 50, 000 fans were turned away from a game as Roker Park was full and the gates were closed, talk attendance records when you have achieved one like over 75,000 at one game

The sad thing is they now need to close the gates to keep them in. Thought somebody was going to get hurt yesterday they were leaving that quickly once Arsenal kicked it up a gear.

50,000 locked out - were they counting accurately or just hearsay and conjecture??

Over 75,000 in 1933 - what happened, were you poorly and missed it?

I think they should be locked in and made to watch.

If Sunderland can persuade the Premier League to award points for the quickest emptying ground they may just stay up.

Roker Park must have been an impressive place if they counted the number of people they didn't let in

Fredor has helped Sunderland achieve yet another record - the highesf number of mind-numbingly ****e drivelling posts in one season. And we're only 1 1/2 months in. Congrats Fredor. <applause>

That's nothing. Our last home game had around 64 million uk citizens who didn't make it in. Fact.

From the Sunderland Echo office, as these people after being turned away walked past their premises, it was estimated over 100, 000 people so 50, 000 is an absolute minimum , of course I have to accept there was not one mistake made for the figures Albert quoted that would be impossible

You're a club historian by all accounts. So, you will be able to tell us all what Sunderland's average attendance was for that season (1932/33) since it is averages that are being discussed on this thread? What was the score at that game you mention, by the way, and the name of the scorer of the winning goal?
