Southampton pulled off the great escape act in 1998-99 won only 3 of the first 19 matches but finished with 41 points !, so come on lads we can do that let's believe we will get it right in January, 3 exellent players brought in one a striker all our players back fit and we CAN do it, we have done it before. take no notice of my daft rants after a match, it is better than kicking the living room door in !, in fact I will not comment now after a match we lose from now on.
I think Sutton is a complete knob, however he does make some valid points. Yes,we ALL have to get away from blaming anybody else but ourselves and the manager has to grow a large pair and very quickly, as do the players and a good start would be to upset Mr Wenger on Saturday.
The article hits the nail on the head our general lack of self belief (club and fans) when times are hard. Its a massive issue but that's because of the little league managerial thinking when (infrequent) good times come. Repeatedly happened since we were massively fined in 1950's for alleged under counter payments (player cash inducements) which were massive in the game. IMV our sin was being a successful team in NE England - too far for southern based clubs maybe ? Are the club still suffering or is it just coincidental ?? Are we still seen this way and is that the reason for our consistant shortcomings - it's maybe the wrong Poyet could not identify. Any other views - not abuse though that's just negative or for a cheap laugh which gets us nowhere.
I said this the other day. Dennis Tueart says in his autobiography that there was a lack of ambition at the club after 1973. I don't believe that mindset has stayed in place since then. Nor do I believe that we're still being punished for something that happened in the 50s. I also think that any north/south bias is a red herring. In the post-war period, we've increasingly become a less-glamourous club because others have overtaken us. Successive regimes have failed to halt the slide into relative obscurity although some, like Bob Murray, have tried. There's no curse, just bad decisions or lack of spending power. And in some cases, a small-time mentality. The current situation is the same- under Short, a variety of poor decisions have been made, culminating in the complete incompetence of the summer just gone. All the club and us as fans can do is roll our sleeves up and get on with it. We're hamstrung- poor summer recruitment and manager who may have been good once but who has lost his mojo. Unless someone stands up and takes charge we'll be relegated with a whimper. David Moyes either needs to change his negative tactics or be replaced by someone with some verve and tenacity. Ellis Short needs to sanction the acquisition of some players who can make a difference.
Happy pills day for monty... I'm on happy pills but not about football... Just bought myself a beautiful Les Paul standard....
Haha please mate. I'm accessing via a 3G and mobile only today as I'm redecorating my in laws house (in between spending loads on a new guitar!) so my match thread would be less in depth than usual
I don't disagree with this view but I do feel Ellis Short has financially supported managers who have bought poorly or the signings have been poor here. My views re southern bias maybe wrong and our continued ill fortune (most of my 50+yrs of support) may be wrong. But it's to easy to blame our current owner(s) or managerial team - it's been that way since Ditchburn in the 50's - Like you I want a comfy safe season with the acquisition of quality players who play for us with composure and skill - SKP style KTF
Great post Monty!! But you're gonna drive yourself mad next time we get mullahed Monty. You'll be bustng to let rip!
The so called pundits always get it wrong. They always look at the first 6 or seven games and decide the table is going to be exactly the same come the end of the season. I genuinely think we were worse, at this point, under Di Canio. Also, if you look at the teams around us, are we really sure that we can't overtake three teams, such as Boro, Hull and Burnley. it's not, really, an impossible task, no matter how bad we've been so far.
There's definitely something wrong and has been for a long time. However, there have been some relative bright patches in that time. The Reid years for instance and the 73 cup win. I just think its coincidence that we've constantly had owners/chairmen who've lacked the funds or vision to build on those successes rather than anything more sinister. I agree that Short has pumped money in and I agree that some managers have spent it badly. But Short, or the people he has appointed have also made bad decisions. Here is a man who does have the resources to push us on but he doesn't have the know-how to do that. I mean, chasing for David Moyes for the last 5 managerial appointments- anyone could see he was damaged goods after Man Utd. There's a lot about SAFC I don't understand- like why so many signings under perform here- these are problems that surely have solutions. It baffles me that no one has sorted them out but it must be because the people running the club are making incorrect calls on things.
Agreed and I bet, (although he sort of seemed aware that we have injuries),he was not fully aware of the fact that we are missing Mannone,Kirchoff,Cattermole,Borini,Larson (all key players in our last 11 games, last season with only one defeat,to which he makes reference to and attempts to compare then to now!!!!). Typical of most pundits they DON'T do enough, if any research before they spout and give their opinion. Like you said though he is a grade A bellend
Bloody hell I wish you had said I have one of them I never use you could of had it for nowt. Does any body else have an Uncle or mate who always seem to have what want just after you have bought it. Lying bastards.
