Most people celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc.

I am quite aware of what was going on in the 1960s, I was there. One of my class mates was gay. Left for London in 1967 because there was more tolerance down there. Did well, involved in designing sets for musicals like Cats.I went to his dad's house about 35 years later on business. Sad, really. Loads of photos of his brother and sister on display but not one of him.

Its not the profession though is it? Half the England womans football team are openly gay, and there's plenty of openly gay male footballers in other countries. It is literally just the professional mens game in this country.

I think the fact that no active professional footballer feels able to admit he's gay is disappointing and shouldn't be case.

You obviously don't think it's an issue.

    Each to their own.

People don't want to be defined by their sexuality, and that is exactly what will happen to the first few players that come out, they won't be just a footballer, they will be that gay footballer in everything from pub conversation to newspaper articles. Once the first few come out and it becomes normalised the rest will feel much more comfortable in doing so.

Wonder if this is just homophobia about male footballers. Would imagine those same people wouldn't have a problem with female footballers who were gay. I'm guessing most of the 8% of those surveyed who objected were male.

FYI I don't really care as the 8% are ****wits either way.

    Thanks

    Regards

One on hand 8% is still too much.

On the other hand i think it would have been 20-30% 15 years ago, especially in our area. So we're evolving, great news.

I wasn't really talking about professions, but it's obviously a fairly common thing that people who are gay have difficulty coming out. Being in the public domain probably makes that harder, which is why as others have said, there's barely any openly gay athletes in general, not just in football.

I lived with a couple of lads when I was a student, one of whom is gay. He got teased a bit at the time about being a bit camp but insisted he wasn't gay. He's now openly gay, but he obviously felt it was difficult to come out in that 'uni lad' sort of environment, even though people would probably have been fine with it.

He only announced he was gay when he left the UK and retired from football. He's subsequently started playing again, but didn't feel he could come out until he thought he wasn't going to be playing any more and he certainly didn't think it was something he could do while playing in England.

I think it is sad that they feel the need to keep their sexuality secret. But that is more to do with what they think the reactions of fellow players would be than the fans.

I wonder how many gay players there actually are in English football. I mean, as someone else mentioned, plenty of female footballers are gay which seems to make that demographic different to the national average. So although people may scream racist or something, there must be certain demographics who are more likely to be gay than others. I bet that professional footballers have a lower proportion of gay people than the average because of the kind of environment it is. I think that gay people are probably less likely to get into professional football in the first place.

I'm sure many people find it difficult to come out, but It's certainly not common for absolutely no-one to feel they're able to be openly gay in a certain job, it's something that seems to be problematic in sport generally and absolutely impossible in English football.
