Janssen has a touch of the Depay's. How bad is Dutch football?

For me the big dissapointment is that that's basically the end of the B team's season. That was these kids' chance right there.

Oh well, we'll have to win the CL instead. It reminded me of one of those international games where the team is made up of more than half of the players making their debuts and as a result there's no cohesion as a team. Unfortunately, I'm not sure we learned anything of much use out of that.

Yep. The balance looked off, for me.
Onomah's not a winger and I think Sissoko would've started on that side if he wasn't suspended.

TBH I was more interested in individual performances than the result, hoping to see some spark from the youngsters and fringe players.

Sadly all it did was confirm my worst fears that Janssen doesn't suit our system and lacks any finesse, we look shaky without Toby and Verts, we can never find a forward pass from midfield and seem to lack that final ball or shot on goal

There's always the early rounds of the FA Cup if we get a good draw. Sadly we can't rule out Europa League either :(

Tbh, I totally forgot about the FA Cup <laugh>

That competition has lost so much prestige down the years. Can hardly think of another sporting event that's declined in significance so much.

    FA Cup ??
And even if they had won, there was only one more game in 2016 for them.

I thought he did well in the first half, we don't really play wingers anyway. If anything I'm more disappointed that N'Koudou didn't play as more a winger, cutting inside too early.

I'd go mental if we won any cup, to be fair.

Didn't deserve anything from that performance and unfortunately very few of the youngsters can emerge from that with their credentials improved. We are astonishingly impotent in the final 3rd and after writing extensively about it the other day, I am filled with a growing sense of foreboding that Harry Kane is the lone key to unlock every single one of our attacking players, no matter how 'experienced' they are. The logic of us chasing Isco now seems absolutely sound and we should move heaven and earth to land him.

Onomah, Carroll and GKN exceptionally poor throughout. The latter appeared to lose all confidence after his slip, which is unacceptable at this level. Dier pretty anonymous despite wearing the armband. Winks not the composed, assured young lad we saw against Gillingham. Davies and Trippier repeatedly caught our of positions and beaten for pace. CCV and Wimmer looked nervy and shaky from the off. Vorm probably MOTM for keeping the score respectable with some superb saves, closely followed by Wanyama who grows in my esteem every time I see him play.

I get the criticism of Janssen but for pity's sake you could've played Messi in front of that crud behind him and he wouldn't have scored. Delighted he at least got a goal and yes, it does look like he is letting the pressure get to him and is trying a bit too hard, but you cannot fault his work rate and determination.

I'll conclude by repeating what I said after their second: The whole game was one set of reserves who played as though they believed that a first team place awaited them if they excelled. The other did not. I wonder if Poch's growing association with 'favourites' instead of a proper meritocracy is beginning to affect the morale of the second string?

I felt this last season when we exited both cups very early on. This year will be even worse without the Europa. But could get a favourable run of weaker teams in the FA cup. Knowing our luck we'll get Arsenal away in the 3rd round <laugh>

Redknapp and Souness couldn't even bring themselves to say it was a penalty but at least they recognised that Lucas tripped Lamela 5 times, more than Quinn managed. Then they go and ignore the other penalty shout. Typical Sky Sports Scouse :D

It is the lack of a cutting edge that worries me the most. We had enough possession - enough to have gone in at half time at least level, if we only had somebody who can deliver a killer pass.

Janssen is not great, but neither is he that bad. And, like most strikers, he needs service into the right areas. Apart from the header he ****ed up, he didn't get it.

Now, now, that's unfair - Janssen breaking into a light jog is more effort than Depay would ever put in.

Spot on. It is very, very reminiscent of AVB's Spurs as soon as the ball crosses the halfway line. Alli is the only player who I can think of who regularly tries to play one touch football. The rest seem to need 5 touches along with a waiver written by a team of lawyers before they try anything audacious. Every single ball in dangerous areas is wrapped, stamped and addressed to the opposition.
