It could have been better spent elsewhere

Full-back or centre-half, perhaps. Gunter wouldn't have cost more than £2 million from Reading, I reckon.

    Wasn't his release fee £1.2m?

Jak had banked enough clean sheets towards the end of last season, through pre season and the beginning of this season to be kept in. All these weekly statistics we read (Curtis being the top defender etc... before the new arrivals) has Jak as one of the top two keepers for saves made in the Premiership. Anyway, it makes no difference NotPhelanIt has made the call which is aiding his demise.

Maybe. I saw quoted figures of £1.5 million. Either way, signing Gunter or another full-back would have been money better spent than a new and rather expensive goalkeeper who hasn't really improved the squad. We've lost Robbo for two months and Elmo just isn't a full-back. I'd take Gunter for £1.2 million rather than Marshall for £5 million every day of the week.

Tommy Smith from Huddersfield or Callum Paterson at Hearts would be good options in January.

Considering Reading paid £2.5m for Gunter, that £1.2m release clause always seemed a little odd.

To be honest, the Diame release clause seemed a little odd to me. I was expecting it to be £5 million at least.

Please stop naming non Premier League players, don't you realise that nobody watches anything else (save for the bit of La Liga thrown in).

Yeah, but I know you do, so it's at least worth a discussion?

We paid £3.5 million if I remember correctly. His release clause being only £1 million more than that seemed really odd considering how talented he is. I was expecting his release clause to be £6.5 million when I heard Newcastle were sniffing around, nowt less than £5 million at the very least.

We'd have made a loss on him taking into account wages and a severance payment (he didnt ask for a transfer).

Not read the thread, but my take is when Greegsy is back we only need two decent options and one back up.

Jak won't want to be third choice, so it's understandable.

    That's football...

Having watched both, I'd sooner sack off McGregor than Jakupovic. Mac has had two massive injuries with us and is at the age where he'll want to be first choice, otherwise his Scotland dream is done. I reckon he'll head back to Rangers.

I think there's a connection between short contracts and low release clauses. Nearly all of our signings in the past few years have been 3 years or shorter. Maybe that's sensible thinking by the Allams after the Bullard fiasco and the Duffen era with long, expensive contracts. However, shorter contracts result in the issue of uncertainty. I don't know how many players are out of contract at the end of this season but I know Robbo is one. If we don't pin him down to a new contract before January, we may have to sell him in the next transfer window or lose him for nowt in the summer if he wants to keep his options open. I remember there was a lot of uncertainty on this board when there were rumours Curtis didn't want to sign a new contract. Meyler, Elmo, Huddlestone and Jakupovic have signed new contracts but in terms of sell-on value, there not our most valuable players. All those players could and probably will go for less than £3.5 million each, Robbo on the other hand is more valuable.

Even if McGregor was fit and we didn't sign Marshall, I'd have Jakupovic first choice, McGregor on the bench and Kuciak and Mannion as back-up.

I was going to post Jak v Marshall stats as a thread, but was away and this thread emerged, so here goes:

All stats for league games only and for the games each person was playing in:

    Jak v Marshall

    Played 5 v 4
    Goals scored 6 v 2
    Goals against 7 v 15
    Avg, goals against 1.4 v 3.75
    Points 7 v 0

Some people think that stats don't always show the whole picture, but **** me, that's a huge difference and tells me everything I need to know on who to select. Also, as mentioned previously (and people laughed at it), Jak's distribution is far superior to Marshall's. But, as I have said before, Phelan is not going to admit he's wrong and he's wasted 5mil, so Marshall it will be.

Meyler, Elmo and Bruce will go in January if we can find better players to replace them. They're all Championship quality anyway (with the exception of Elmo, who can be a real PL player on his day) so I wouldn't be angry if we got between £1m and £2m each for them. Elmo might go for a bit more. Thudd I don't think would drop into the Championship unless it was for big money, Bruce might be tempted in January if we replace well, but I'm not holding my breath.
